Deep violet-red color. Very expressive with spicy aromas and ripe red pepper and cherry notes. Great amplitude in the mouth, with a very good structure and a soft, elegant, and persistent finish. Ideal pairing with grilled, roasted or smoked red meat, goat and sheep cheeses, rice, stews, and pasta. Excellent with chocolate.

Our winery is located in Perdriel, Lujan de Cuyo, about 30 minutes away from the city of Mendoza. Upon entering we are greeted by our Malbec vines. The winery itself has been built in a modern classical style, surrounded by gardens designed by a landscape artist using native plantings and having the Andes mountain range as a backdrop.
The winery boasts the latest technology in the production of wines of the highest quality: small-capacity stainless steel tanks and cement deposits, each with independent temperature controls, enable a specific and detailed monitoring of each one of our wines. Ageing takes place in barrels of French and American oak.
The winery also has equipment which receives, sorts and selects the incoming grapes and subsequently bottles, labels and also packs the wine for shipment, thus allowing us to control quality at each stage of the wine making process.
Coen Estates, situated in Tupungato, Mendoza, is a hidden gem nestled 3,000 feet above sea level. This idyllic location boasts the ideal climate for grape cultivation, with cold winters and hot summers, irrigated by abundant rainfall and sourced from a 1300-feet-deep underground water reservoir originating from the majestic Andes Mountains. In this pristine environment, devoid of industrial contamination, Coen Estates thrives as the perfect haven for crafting world-class wines.
At the heart of Coen’s success are two magnificent certified organic vineyards: Finca Poloc, with over 30 years of history, and Finca la Victoria, around a decade old. Covering approximately 50 acres each, these vineyards are meticulously managed by the Vera family, seasoned vineyard owners with over 40 years of experience. With their dedication to organic farming, Coen ensures that every grape carries the pure essence of the Uco Valley terroir.
In the world of winemaking, one name stands out as a true luminary – Mr. Attilo Pagli. Hailing from Italy, he is not only the Chief Winemaker at Coen Estates but also a global force who elevated Argentinian Malbec to international acclaim. Mr. Attilo’s trajectory in the world of wine began over 30 years ago, when he graduated from the Oneological School of Siena in 1983 and then began working with iconic Tuscan winemaker, Giulio Gambelli.

2020 COEN MALBEC CLASSIC
The wine arrived a day late, or Wednesday, so I put it in the cellar, or basement as we usually call it, to let it rest until Friday. For some reason I remembered this wine and after searching it, found it had been offered on casemates on March 15th. I went back and read the listing. There was one excellent labrat report and kaolis had dug up numerous and extensive reviews.
Fast forward to Friday. We usually drink any type of red wine, but +1 prefers deeper flavored ones. I’m not particular, but prefer to pair the wine with the food. So, in this case, since I was familiar with malbecs, I decided to make chicken and beef fajitas.
Upon opening, when poured into a large Bordeaux glass, the wine appeared to be most similar to the cranberry gelatin that comes in a can. The color was a good match, as well as the transparency. The first aromas are of dark fruits with no specific distinguishing smell. The first tasting also reveals dark fruits, such as blackberry, blueberry and plum. There is a little acidity and the tannins are mild. The fajitas were a perfect pairing.
After an hour, without decanting, the tannins had softened and the fruit was less pronounced. If you like a more fruit forward wine, I would PnP this and drink it. If you prefer softer tannins and fruit, then let it sit for an hour before consuming. I would call this medium bodied with medium complexity.
Go back and read the March 15th notes. This is an easy drinking malbec. As with most malbecs, this wine is versatile and could be paired with almost any type of food, i,e, beef, chicken, veggies, sharp cheeses, dark chocolate, etc. I think of malbec as a go-to wine for both serving to guests or to carry to a party. It’s always a crowd pleaser. Thanks Casemates for the opportunity to taste and report.
POST posting comment. $10 and change/bottle. Crazy reasonable. You won’t go wrong with a case (pending review of the other wine, of course.)

I was the lucky recipient of the Mauricio Lorca Malbec. I received the email while out of town, however my better half was able to retrieve from the local UPS facility for us to enjoy on Thursday evening.
Upon PnP, it was dark and inky. Initial sniff was spicy with pepper. Nice swirl and a lot of cherry and the aforementioned pepper in the first taste.
We let it decant for an hour. The pepper was still present, just not as forward. The cherry was a little more prevalent. Very good mouthfeel.
As we continued through the bottle, the cherry and pepper continued to volley around in our mouths with a very nice drinking experience. This paired well with the Bison we had for dinner. Did not overpower and complimented excellently.
Upon seeing the price listed was surprised. Very good QPR and we will be buying. Overall a good quality wine at this price point. Would recommend.
