2022 Artesa Estate Vineyard Chardonnay, Los Carneros, Napa Valley
92 Points, The Wine Palate
Tasting Notes
Artesa’s 2022 Los Carneros Chardonnay displays great fruit freshness, intensity, and elegance. Aromatic notes of lemon-citrus and white blossom, while enhancing the minerality and bright, vibrant fruit flavors of citrus and stone fruit in the wine. Partial barrel and malolactic fermentation, combined with lees stirring, produces a Chardonnay with added layers of complexity, focused and with bright acidity, imparting hints of Meyer lemon, nectarine, and lemongrass.
Vintage Notes
With climate variability as the new normal, the vintage 2022 was characterized by two significant episodes: the triple digit heat over five days in September and the rain that brought harvest to a sudden halt. That was the reason why the Winemakers are calling the vintage “the tale of two harvests,” making it one of the more unique vintages in recent history. The white wine harvest kicked off in early August, followed quickly by red wine varieties, the typical gap between the white and red wine harvest was almost nonexistent. The general description for the vintage 2022 white wines as having perfect acidity and freshness with remarkable flavors and textures, and red wines as excellent structured with deep red colors, luxurious tannins and exquisite fruit-forward aromatics.
The Vineyard
The Los Carneros AVA is known for ideal conditions to grow high quality Chardonnay grapes, granting us fruit that is incredibly balanced and with great acidity. Temperatures are moderated by the adjoining San Pablo Bay, cool afternoon breezes, and persistent morning fog. As hot air rises above the inland valleys, it draws cool air from the Pacific Ocean. This climate yields grapes that have both enough cool hang time and sunshine to develop great natural acidity and deep fruit flavor. The grapes used to produce this wine were sourced from three distinct vineyards in Los Carneros, all acclaimed sites we have worked closely with for many years.
Winemaking
The grapes were hand-harvested at night and brought to the winery immediately afterwards, where they were whole cluster pressed, by using a custom “champagne” cycle that gently pushes the must, rendering clean juice but hardly any solids or unwanted phenolic compounds. 30% of the juice was placed in neutral French oak barrels and 70% in stainless steel tanks, where they underwent alcoholic fermentation, both with selected and native yeasts. After primary fermentation, about 40% of the lots went through malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged on its lees for 9 months, with monthly bâtonnage (lees stirring), to add complexity and enhance mouthfeel.

Born in Barcelona, raised in Napa Valley
In 1991, Raventós Codorníu, Spain’s oldest winemaking family, embarked on a journey to a new world: a sea-facing hillside in the Napa Valley, featuring rocky soils and a favorable coastal climate. In Los Carneros, we established new roots, drawing upon a 460-year winemaking legacy to craft the next generation of Estate Grown, artisan wines. This endeavor was named Artesa.

Thank you, Terry, for this rat opportunity. We received the bottle last week but waited until the last minute to enjoy it as our household is recovering from a bug that I’m sure has messed with our palates.
On initial pour, the nose was not too special. Just a typical, nice chardonnay aroma that belied the tasting experience.
First sip was eye-opening. Literally. The flavors and brightness were completely unexpected. Very fruity - bosc pear, grapefruit - and complex, but at the same time not a fruit bomb. The flavors mellowed significantly as the glass warmed, so drink it cold. If you’re not a fan of oaky, buttery chards, this one will make you happy. We tasted it without pairings and weren’t disappointed. We agreed that it would pair nicely with a cheese plate or any white fish entree.
Bottom line, we really enjoyed this wine. Case price on this bottle is a steal. I’ll find room for it somewhere.

Wine Review: This clear and light straw-colored Chardonnay from Artesa opens with a light citrus and almond bouquet with hints of Macintosh apple. On the palate, this wine is light bodied with medium acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, round, crisp, and easy to drink. The flavor profile is a lemon and stony minerality blend with notes of green apple and herbal tea. We also detected hints of spice, saline, and oak in the mix. The finish is dry and refreshing. We would pair this food friendly Chard with a chilled crab cocktail. Enjoy - KWGTP

@ArtesaWinery What our friend @hscottk is telling you is that your sale is over, it’s too late to take advantage of the deal. People do enjoy chatting with winery folks, and it seems to enhance sales, but generally the chatter wanes once the sale has ended and we’ve moved on to the next thing.
Thanks for joining Mike. Better late than never However, even if you still have inventory available, the time frame for the offer here on Casemates has already ended.
Participation from the winery is encouraged (and much appreciated) while the offer is still current. That way your feedback/insight can help us decide if we should purchase.
If/when there’s another Artesa offer here, please be sure to come back and join in on the fun.
@ArtesaWinery I purchased a case and am looking forward to trying it! I do not like buttery oaky Chardonnays, so this one sounds like it will fit that bill nicely.
