2019 El Necio Reserva Syrah, Altamira, Uco Valley, Argentina
Tasting Notes
“Garnet color. Peppery aromas and flavors of overripe strawberries and pink peppercorn with a lively, dry-yet-fruity medium-full body and a long blackberry pie and tar finish with chewy, grippy tannins and light oak. A peppery Syrah with ample fruit.” – BTI, Beverage Testing Institute
2019 marks the eleventh Syrah vintage at Bodega Calle. Access to a superb vineyard in Altamira allows us to make a small quantity of concentrated, memorable wine. Organic farming.

At the crossroads of four corners and four historic wineries, Luigi Bosca, Baldini, and Lagarde, Bodega Calle is located on their southwest corner. A small-lot, gravity-flow, red wine making studio located in the prized viticultural area of Luján de Cuyo, our winery was opened in 2001 in the restored Claudio Erice winery, originally built in 1925.
The winery concentrates on varietal wines and premium red blends sourced from viticultural areas throughout Luján and Valle de Uco. All wines are made with the use of gravity and are never pumped to deliver the grapes to the fermentation tanks. All grapes are farmed without the use of herbicides or pesticides, are hand picked and sorted and vinified using native yeasts, which results in a more gradual fermentation curve and less intervention with refrigeration. Bodega Calle is a certified organic winery and the wines are GMO free and vegan. Also, the winery recently joined the DOC of Luján de Cuyo, the 5th winery ever to be admitted. is its principal owner and general manager.

I’ve been in a wood fire pizza making phase and when I saw this bottle of 2019 El Necio Syrah show up I chuckled a bit at the donkey and went straight to getting my dough started. I thought, an everything pizza would be perfect! We’re talking bacon, arugula, balsamic vinegar, huuuge salami and pepperoni slices… I mean we’re talking wine… I usually like to drink some while making pizzas so I got started with a couple glasses and blasted through 5 pizzas and ended with a pretty nice family pizza night. I mean for a Thursday…cmon, I can’t ask for more. This went great with the food and should stick with food imo. Right… the wine…
Appeared to be a dark garnet red with thick long legs. The nose was initially stewed red and dark fruits and a faint waft of pepper that almost made me want to sneeze. Here comes the big words; on the PALATE I initially got dried red and dark fruits, it rolled smoothly across the PALATE into a sudden lip smacking, grippy, dry yet slightly jammy finish. There was something else about the PALATE wifey and I were discussing and couldn’t quite figure out what it was then. The next day I saved a couple of glasses and picked up dried strawberry, plum, tar(aha the mystery solved), and pepper in both the nose and the PALATE. The smoothness went away but definitely not the grippy, lip smacking finish.
With this being the second bottle of wine I have had with a Donkey on it, it was just as “adequate” as the other was. This wine needs a lot of time in the cellar or out of the bottle and with a lot of food. At around $11/btl here that’s a pretty decent deal for this wine. Cheers and thank you Alice, WD, and Casemates for always making family nights here in the desert pretty cool!
@TechnoViking Wine sounds interesting…as an aside I just showed an entire uninitiated dinner party the “Techno Viking” video this weekend…timeless

@83fxwg haha both that one and the one with subtitles are funny.
As for the wine, it’s ok. I was hoping it would be in a variety pack so that I could try other stuff from the winery.

2019 El Necio Argentinian Syrah - $40 = 24.23%
I received a bottle of Bodega Calle El Necio Reserva 2019 Syrah from Mendoza, Argentina on Tuesday. It’s still quite hot here in Florida and the bottle arrived warm. Hoping to thread the needle between cooked wine and bottle shock, I put it on the kitchen counter under the AC vent to slowly cool and rest for 24 hours.
I opened the bottle on Wednesday night to enjoy a glass with a plate of grilled chicken sausage, peppers, and tomatoes. My initial impressions after letting it breathe for 20 minutes are: Look: The wine is a deep, inky garnet red. Very rich and inviting looking.
Nose: The scent of this wine seems surprisingly delicate. There was no alcohol burn on the nose, even when sniffed right after I poured the glass. It was hard to pick out individual scents in the nose. Usually I’m pretty good at identifying different notes, but with this wine it just smelled like red wine. I think it lost nuance and complexity during shipping. Taste: The flavor was mild and a little flat. I found it woodsy, with a strong flavor of red plums combined with notes of black pepper and warming spices. There was a slight alcohol burn on the end and I hoped that it was just a little tight and simply needed more time to open up.
I left a glass out for an hour and came back to it. It hadn’t changed much. So I decided to try again the next day.
Day 2 had not improved the nose at all. It remained slight and elusive. The flavor did change slightly. Red plum was still the strongest note, but I also detected more tannin than the night before, with cherries, black pepper, and a slight astringency like Juniper on the finish. It’s pleasant, but unremarkable.
I generally enjoy Argentinian red wines, but I think this one got a little cooked during transit. I’m not sure that my review is a fair one to the wine. I suspect that under cooler shipping circumstances El Necio would have more to offer. Thank you to Alice with CaseMates and Bodega Calle for the opportunity to review this wine.
