2022 Frogâs Tooth Petite Sirah, Sierra Foothills
Tasting Notes
Originally, Professor Durif cultivated this grape in the Rhone Region of France. However, it languished because of this humid region. In the 1960s, Concanon Vineyards in Livermore ârebirthedâ this varietal. Classic Americanization⊠same deep dark fruit and wine as Syrah⊠individual grapes are much smaller and grow in a tight cluster, âletâs call it Little Sirahâ, they said. No small mouthfeel here! Dark fruit flavors of plum and black cherries! Finishing with great spicy notes.

Since 1999, Frogâs Tooth Vineyards and Winery has been growing, crafting, pouring, and sharing our handcrafted small batch wines from the Sierra Foothills. What we donât grow on our beautiful 10-acre vineyard in Copperopolis, CA, we source from other local growers who share our passion.
From our inviting tasting room and patio, a short walk from Main Street in Murphys, we have been pouring our wines since 2007. Our winemaker Will SavoieHoule has brought a new youthful passion to crafting delicious wines. Each and every varietal is painstakingly hand-sorted to ensure only the best fruit makes it into our award-winning wines.
Willâs passion for bringing out the best that our fruit has to offer is contagious. We encourage you to come by our tasting room and enjoy a glass on our patio or join us for one of our club member parties at our Vineyard.
Every sip of our wines is a true taste of the Sierra Foothills!

Good day all!
I had the pleasure of ratting both of the Petite Sirahs. Iâve long been a fan of wines from the Sierra Foothills/Amador area and these Frogâs Tooth wines are no exception.
2021 Petite Sirah: Lovely deep ruby in the glass. Nose is restrained with primarily dark fruit (plum) with hints of cherry and subtle oak. With additional open time a bit of warm spice can be detected. Unsurprisingly, this wine is juicy with plum, sour cherry, and black fruit flavors. Tannins and acidity are well balanced and there is a long finish, primarily on the mid and back palette. Alcohol is noticeable, but does ease as it opens up. This petite sirah works well with rich food, both savory and sweet. Great with triple chocolate ice cream.
2022 Petite Sirah: Inky ruby color in glass. Nose is brighter and more toward dark and red fruits. There is a more prominent spice note, I lean toward black tea. The 2022 isnât quite as juicy as the 2021, but has much more nuance. A bit tart, more spice, with plum and blueberry flavors. There is a moderate length finish that is more front to mid palette. Tannin and acidity are also well integrated. This is definitely the more complex year and works with a broader range of foods.
Both wines are very good and highlight how year to year the same wines can have different characteristics. Both are thoroughly enjoyable and I recommend them.
Cheers!
Rat Erisire here with a hopefully not TOO late review!, and due to some delivery issues, I received my wines this morning, and before I even opened the website I did a tasting with some sharp irish cheddar.
What a surprise to open my box and receive both the 2021 AND the 2022 to try! Arriving home at 10am, I quickly decanted into a couple of casemates glasses.
2021 Sierra Foothills Petit Sirah, 15.7% alcohol:
The has a dark garnet color and a nose of dark fruit and tobacco. In the mouth, it reminds me of pomegranate and black cherry with a lovely tannic finish, with a richness that is well balanced with the sharp cheese. We have a family favorite recipe for lamb loin with a fig cascobel chili sauce and itâs a tragedy I donât have that to eat with this.
2022 Sierra Foothills Petit Sirah, 14.2% alcohol:
The 2022 has a slightly lighter garnet color with a nose of more bright berry fruits like strawberry and blueberry with blackberry. It still has a depth and darkess youâd expect from Petit Sirah, but is slightly more fruit forward. I loved this just as much with the cheese, and would have loved trying this with lamb.
I canât stress enough what a delight getting to drink these wines was, and how much I wish Iâd been able to get these on Friday to slowly drink over the weekend and pair with several different foods. Lamb, different meats and cheeses (rosette de lyon salami, strong truffle cheese, 26 month gouda), texas style brisket, st. louis style ribs⊠Iâve already called friends to drink the rest of these with and am organizing a feast!
Thanks to Alice, Casemates, and Frog Hill Vineyards for the delicious wine and the fun experience! In for a case, making others buy a case, this is an incredible set of wines.
@CruelMelody This is the recipe we use. We probably eat this a few times a year or so, so the sauce gets made and frozen, it had a great shelf life that way. Lamb with Fig Cascabel sauce
