We make this cider the same way we approach our wines: with organically farmed fruit, minimal intervention, and a focus on place. For this release, we sourced primarily Gravensteins and Kings from two almost forgotten orchards. One deep in the Sonoma Coast near Fort Ross that dates back to the 1800s and another in the Green Valley area of Sebastopol planted in the 1960s. A few buckets of pears and quince found their way into the blend as well. We have always been fans of the clean apple-forward gently sparkling Normandy style and have tried to emulate that with a California sensibility here.
Each bottle was Tirage bottled by hand with a three spout filler, settled for 7 months, and then disgorged by hand one at a time. The amount of sediment will vary quite a bit from bottle to bottle.
Specs
Style: Méthode Champenoise, gently sparkling
Apples: Primarily Gravenstein & King (with a little pear and quince)
We began the namesake Hobo Wine Company in 2002. My dad didn’t think it was a very good name for a wine company and many people have shared his sentiment over the years, but it has always felt right to us so we have braved on with it.
Hobo is all Sonoma County. I was raised in Sonoma County. After a lot of searching around, I have chosen to raise my two daughters here as well.
As a grape growing region, there is so much to explore and experiment with here. Many sub AVAs have characters and qualities that make a Sonoma County brand able to evolve and stay exciting. Primarily, we have focused on Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. More recently, we have added an Aglianico to experiment with what might be the future.

Do you have hobo energy but like to occasionally feel like a millionaire? This cider feels like an elegant brut, with its sparkling bubbles and straightforward, clean cider taste.
It’s a light summer sipper. Clean, simple, and refreshing. It entered with a bubbly start, overflowing out of the bottle the moment I popped the cap (beware!). The pale yellow color lets you judge this book by its cover: it’s a lightly flavored, bubbly cider, reminiscent of a brut.
It strays towards the straightforward, so if you’re someone who has a palate for the quirky, it may not be for you, but if you enjoy the classic, crisp vibe of a cider, this is for you.
This looks like the same cider: “Our second cider on the books”
The composition of apples is different though: “50% gravensteins and kings and 50% a mix of kinds including crab apples, pears and quince”

500 or 750 ml? Odd that it’s not specified and we don’t get to see back label!?
@pmarin Flatiron has some and specifies a 750, assuming same bottling/correct info etc
