2019 Kunde Meritage 202, Destination Series, Sonoma Valley
90 Points, Wine Spectator
Double Gold, 2024 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
Tasting Notes
The 2019 Meritage 202 is a full-bodied red blend that pays homage to the winery’s original bonded number ‘202’ given to patriarch Louis Kunde in the 1900s. The blending of five Bordeaux varieties forms a distinct nose of plum, currants and anise. Its heady bouquet is enhanced by opulent, full-mouth flavors of black cherry and dried cranberries.
Winemaking Notes
We chose to really focus on the luscious fruit from a plentiful but ripe harvest. Soft and silky tannins are pushed forward as a showcase to support the dominant flesh of the mixed berries of the vintage. Based on the highly integrated tannins and bright acid structure, this one screams holiday meal — turkey doused with gravy or pot roast!

At Kunde Family Estate, our winemaking mission is to craft elegant wines with a real sense of place—beautifully balanced and expressive of our dramatic vineyard landscape.
For over a century, five generations of the Kunde Family have farmed our 1,850 acre-estate in the heart of Sonoma Valley—a truly remarkable legacy in the modern age of California winemaking. A fervent, forward-thinking vision of land stewardship and sustainability began over one hundred years ago, and has been shaped with each successive generation.
Today, Kunde Family Estate is still family owned and operated with a hands-on team of 4th and 5th generation family members at the helm. At the end of the day, every decision we make, every wine we craft, and every experience we provide honors the legacy of founder Louis Kunde, who emigrated from Germany and purchased the original Wildwood Vineyards ranch at the turn of the century in 1904. Cresting the second century was a profound milestone for the family. Moving forward, we remain committed to innovation and state-of-the-art facilities, while also maintaining a deep, personal commitment to sustainable winegrowing and preserving the land for generations to come.

I was a lucky taster that got to try the Kunde Sonoma Valley Meritage from 2019.
On pnp the color was a very dark purple, so dark it was almost inky. The wine also not transparent and quite opaque, unfiltered and unfined? On the nose I got blackberries and maybe cassis. For the initial flavors I got blackberry, a bramble? It was slightly vegetal but not in a green pepper way.
There were medium tannins that were well integrated. They let you know they were there but not in a mouth puckering way. Wine also had decent acid allowing it to cut through a butter basted steak. It worked well with the steak, mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. The wine also had a nice medium to long mouth filling finish with that brings about some salivary action.
It was quite good and I think ready to drink now. I think you could drink it by itself but it’s still got the structure to stand up to red meats. I enjoyed it.

Absolutely confirming I’ve been at this way too long and have lost my mind.
WE…89 points. This dark, superripe-tasting wine based on Merlot and Malbec drenches lots of soft tannins in dried blueberries and plums, milk chocolate and cocoa. The wine is rich and mouthfilling, making it a good fit for meats and pastas. — Jim Gordon 12/31/23
Spectator…90 points. A handsome blend, well-structured and generous, with red currant, tomato leaf and black olive flavors that end with medium-grained tannins. Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2029. 4,536 cases made. Tim Fish 11/15/23

A bit about the blend would be appreciated.
I don’t think we’ve seen a Kunde since the WW days,at least not that I recall.
@rjquillin You could be forgiven for not recalling, there have been a couple but it’s been a few years.
