Lapis Luna (Latin for “Stone and Moon”) Wines’ stunning labels introduce the drinker to “the faceless hero,” a timeless story of struggle, aspiration, and redemption. The quest depicted on the bottles reflects the hero’s journey to reach their goal. This journey represents the story of the wine’s creation. Established in 1999, every release has pushed conventional winemaking limits to produce exceptional wines from undiscovered California vineyards.
Lapis Luna’s motto: Reach for the Moon, imparts the quality of turning everyday moments into joyful gifts and creating objects of beauty that bear the mystery of life’s never-ending journey.
Tasting Notes
Rich, dark and enticing. Flavors of lush blueberry, plumbs, and blackberry cobbler. Finish is smooth, long, and juicy.
The Vintage
The 2022 Zinfandel is one of a kind. The growing season began with ideal weather conditions through early summer, until an extended heat event beginning in late August accelerated the harvest and reduced yields for some varieties. The reduced crop size helped to produce memorable wines of great concentration, color, and complexity.
The Vineyard
Known for ocean-cooled climates ranging from rolling coastal hills to vineyards wrapped with towering coast redwoods, the Mendocino Wine region is not only beautiful, but also one of California’s largest premium wine-growing regions recognized for the diversity and quality of its wines. The climatic variation between the warmer inland and cooler coastal AVAs here creates a broad range of wine styles. The grapes for our Lapis Luna Zinfandel are grown in the warmer inland vineyards lending to the ripe, concentrated aromatics and flavors.
About the Winemaker
Nicole Walsh is a star winemaker with 23 vintages making wine. She has an abundance of go plus scores and is a respected leader in the Women Owned Winery Movement.
Winemaking Note
All of the fruit was gently destemmed and crushed, then inoculated. Each fermentation was pumped-over twice daily, with the temperature peaking at 90°F. Maceration from 12 to 28 days, barrel aged 10 months.
Established in 1999, Lapis Luna translates to “stone” and “moon”. Over the past 20 years, we have been on a journey to produce exceptional wines from incredible California vineyards. Our wines deliver fresh and vibrant fruit, balanced with lively acidity and good structure, creating true-to-varietal expressions that can be enjoyed every night of the week.
The label artwork originated with 400-year-old copperplate engravings from the early 1600s, published by the poet Herman Hugo. Meneer Hugo was born in Brussels, Belgium. In 1624, he published the popular book “Pia Desideria” (Loving Desires) containing engravings and emblems of love. The book became a classic of seventeenth century. Each Lapis Luna label shows a faceless hero overcoming obstacles in a timeless story of aspiration and redemption. The quest depicted on the bottles reflects the hero’s journey to reach for the moon.

@ejrunion owners not exactly a conglomerate… winemaker still on board, hey it’s 80 bucks a box, word on the street this is a juicy jammy zin that if you like the style, no downside.
Point taken on price. They are a part of War Room Cellars with Bonny Doon and a few others, but you are right about the winemaker. Love to hear from them! Might be an easy choice on a daily drinker.
@ejrunion I will confirm this is a solid daily drinker/crowd pleaser. I don’t know about use of mega purple in this wine, but I have had multiple vintages of Lapis Luna and always enjoy it.
my husband likes wine, me not as much…
but i end up being the wine buyer lol… so i buy wine on here and rely heavily on the rats and folks comments.
i told him i’m not buying anything without the rats after the last cheaper wine with no rats… the Domaine La Garrigue Côtes-du-Rhône Cuvée Romaine, i thought it was awful…he said we will let it rest for a year…lol
we shall see but i bought this hoping it is like smashberry, i really liked that one…he said fine he has plenty of other “good” wine to drink. lol i will post if it is good or bad, and what mr mick has to say.
Hey, this stuff isn’t half bad… Definitely what I’d consider burger/pizza wine, but I will happily sip on this. Perfect timing for a summer cookout mass-appeal red. I’ve had way worse and three times the price.

Two days in a row with no Rats? Is this a new thing? Cheers!
@cynthylee
I certainly hope not.
Also, hope you’re doing well!
@cynthylee @kawichris650 Rats still very much alive, may a miss a few one way or the other now and again.
Is this a mega purple product? It is so cheap! I would like to buy this, but I always worry about wines from labels that are a part of a conglomerate.

I loves me a jammy zin! It would be nice to hear an expert review, but the comments were helpful!!
Drinking the 2021. Very smooth, easy drinking. CrowdPleaser and an easy drinking summer red wine
Another offering without a rat. Has CM changed its process?
@kellybutler see Wine David’s response above to similar question. No process change…

Agree it isn’t half bad! Nice blend of flavors, but a little too sweet. My go to fix for this situation is to give it a little chill.
