2020 Laurent Miquel Alaina Languedoc AOP, France
Tasting Notes
Itâs SundayâŚFrom the sundrenched terrace, we love watching our daughter, Alaina, making new discoveries in the garden. In this magical place, she enjoys the fresh breeze from the wildflowers, listening to the cicadaâs heady chants, and skipping stones across the lake. Join us for a promenade with this wine that epitomizes the South of France. Admire the mountains and the rolling green vineyards. Awaken your five senses to enjoy a timeless moment.
Our Alaina Languedoc is a typical southern French blend with a dominant varietal of spicy Syrah. This wine offers a ripe nose of red fruits, with spices and aromatic herbs. The palate is mellow with intense berry flavor and a hint of rosemary notes.
This elegant red will be perfect with all kinds of meat such as grilled beef or chicken, and mature cheeses. Alaina can also be enjoyed on its own.

Dawn harvesting with parcel selection, and fermenting takes place in stainless steel tanks with adapted temperature with skin contact to give it generosity. 40% of the wine is aged in big oak tanks for one year.

âSolasâ is the Irish for âlightâ and in Old French means âjoyâ, âpleasureâ, and âenjoymentâ. Our Solas wines reďŹect the purity, balance, and light-handed approach that characterizes Laurentâs approach to winemaking.
Solas Pinot Noir is a well-balanced, food-friendly wine with a medium body and light, bright berry ďŹavours â red cherry, raspberry, and blackberry. Smooth on the palate with aromas of garrigue strawberries and rosemary and hints of Indian spiced tea on the ďŹnish.

We are eight-generation winemakers. So weâve got history. That history informs but doesnât dictate what we do. We respect the past, but constantly try to improve upon it. By always looking for better, more natural, and sustainable ways to harvest the worldâs most elegant French wines. We are Laurent Miquel.
The vineyards at Laurent Miquel in Languedoc have a history of winemaking that goes all the way back to 1202, when the monks of Abbey de Fontcaude first began growing vines there. Today, alongside his wife Neasa, Laurent Miquel is the 8th generation of his family to work in these vineyards and is known for growing varietals not normally grown in the region such as Syrah and AlbariĂąo. His winemaking philosophy is to respect the past, but constantly try to improve upon it and as a result, has created some of the most elegant French wines in the region.

Labrat checking in, September 1st, 2024 the year of our lord. Happy Labor Day weekend, for those that celebrate.
The cork:
No cork. Screw top. Like Maddog20/20. Offputting. Like Cisco.
(I have no issues with screw tops)
Look:
Darkish purple/ruby. Not inky dark. Darker in the glass not held up to Duder Mifflin paper.
Also, I thought the bottle label was wrinkled, but⌠thatâs a (Iâm guessing) family tree.
Legs:
Dunno why I post these. I suppose to prove it contains decent alcohol. 14% according to the bottle.
Nose:
Pretty light. Seems like the wine is okay, minus the condition of the screw top.
Anise. Slight oak. Black fruit. Not as much alcohol as Iâd expect from the legs. This one doesnât fell young or like thereâs a lot of alcohol. It does open up a bit over time. Not a ton. Decanting did little here.
Taste:
Pretty straight forward. Berry, oak. The fruit is fullish, but not as much as I was expecting. Earthy. Easy drinker, but to the point itâs almost on the boring side.
Aftertaste:
Black cherry. Soft french oak. Slight clay.
The wrap up:
UeP (unscrew et pour- see what I did there?). Itâs a pretty okay dry wine. Everyday drinker, or the bottle for the coworker you have to get something for but you keep forgetting their name so you nickname them Big Something. âmad okayishâ, worth $10ish.
Bonus round:
You can rearrange the letters in âLaurent Miquelâ to spell out âMental Liqueurâ. Do with that what you will.
@ecue In case you were wondering why all those nice pics donât render hereâŚ
They were uploaded as pdf files; those just donât work as they are not a proper image file format, and apple heic isnât one either.
We almost missed this one heading into the holiday weekend. Fortunately UPS allowed my 20 3/4s son to sign on the 2nd delivery attempt.
Alaina is in a nice looking bottle. The extra height is an annoyance for standard storage but it does stand out.
First pour was muted; it rode down in a cooler. But once we allowed it to warm the flavors showed up.
Taste is a red fruit⌠raspberry? And blackberry, with a little leather on the finish. Some acidity but I didnât get much tannin. It made for a quick sip with just a little tart aftertaste. This wine is thin but paired well with fatty bratwursts and beef hot dogs.
This is fine as table wine. It doesnât inspire, but would be good for a party with friends. At $7/bottle for the case, this deal will be worth it if anything stands out (the reserve Pinot or Cab Saul?)
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?

@ecue still LOL at the Mental Liqueur. Do you have a bot help with that or just purely your own?
Also normally like screw-caps or whatever the winemaker term is now.some good producers in CA and PNW use them even on premium wines.
But when I saw very cheap French wines for sale, remembering International Mystery Case of swill many of us bought a few years ago. So, no.
