Garnet in color with crystal clarity. A perfumed nose of fresh plum, strawberry pate du fruit, cranberry, bing cherry, violets, vanilla, and sweet earth. A raspberry attack leads to a layered mouth of pomegranate, red currant, red plum, anise, and hints of cocoa. Firm but elegant tannins give way to a long pomegranate and cherry finish.
Vintage Summary
The 2021 growing season was characterized by a cool growing season and only one heat spike in mid-June. The lack of heat events and moderate, cool weather in September and October made the window of opportunity much longer for picking at optimal grape maturity. Due to the cool growing season, 2021 was one of the latest harvests in recent memory. Yields were average to above average in size. Long hang time on the vines resulted in concentrated flavors and above average acidity — especially for Pinot Noir — and quality is outstanding.

Oceano Wines, founded by winemaker Rachel Martin and Grammy-award-winning producer Kurt Deutsch, is a collaboration that combines entrepreneurial excellence and winemaking expertise. The two met serendipitously at the Middleburg Film Festival in 2014, where they sat next to each other at a dinner before the screening of Kurt’s feature film, “The Last Five Years.”
Rachel has more than 20 years of experience growing grapes and producing wine at her family’s Boxwood Estate Winery in Middleburg, Virginia. Kurt, a senior vice president at Warner Music Entertainment, and producer of the Tony award nominated musical, The Notebook, currently on Broadway.
With their shared creative vision, they decided to create exceptional wines from the Spanish Springs Vineyard on the
San Luis Obispo coast, the westernmost vineyard site in California. This location offers the cool climate ideal for producing some of the best red wines—specifically Pinot Noir—as well as exceptional Chardonnay wine. Their partnership led to both their marriage in 2018 and the release of their first wine, the 2016 Spanish Springs Vineyard Chardonnay. Oceano Wines is now recognized for its outstanding traditional and certified sustainable wines, as well as its best non alcoholic wine options, appealing to many a wine connoisseur, worldwide

I was alerted via email from UPS on Monday evening that I would be receiving a delivery from WCC. It arrived the next day (Tuesday) at noon. At 4:55pm on Tuesday, I received the always coveted email from Alice (better late than never ) letting me know I had been selected as a lab rat. Fortunately UPS gave me a heads up and I was able to make last minute arrangements in order to ensure I’d be home and be able to sign for the delivery.
Fast forward to tonight… They say two heads are better than one, so (per usual) I recruited a friend and we used a De Long tasting note sheet as a framework to form the following notes.
I honestly don’t drink a whole lot of Pinot Noir. I don’t have anything against it, I simply just don’t have much of it in my collection. However, I did some digging and I found a 2013 Windrun Pinot Noir to use as a comparison.
Color depth: Medium
Color hue: Ruby
Clarity: Clear
Aroma intensity: Aromatic
Development: Youthful
Aromas: Strawberry, cherry, raspberry, black pepper, and a little bit of oak.
Dry/Sweet: Dry
Body: Light
Acidity: Tart
Tannins: Medium and round.
Balance: Good (great honestly)
Flavor intensity: Flavorful
Flavors: Sour cherry, raspberry, strawberry, black pepper
Finish: Medium
Conclusion:
It was quite entertaining comparing these two wines side by side because right off the bat they were so different just on the nose alone. It was truly night and day. The Oceano was obviously fresh and youthful, while the Windrun was darker (aromatically) and earthy. Those differences carried over to the palate, but both were very enjoyable on their own merits.
My friend and I agreed the Oceano is well made and it’s something we’d both happily drink again. I asked him how much he’d expect this wine to cost and he said he could see it fetching $30 per bottle. Now seeing the case price, this has QPR written all over it!
The wine was paired with fondue and it held up wonderfully. A small amount of the wine was reserved for tasting on day two and I’ll be sure to report back if there are any changes.
Many thanks to Oceano, @winedavid49 , @winedavid59 , @wccwinegirl and the entire Casemates crew for all the work you do. It’s much appreciated, and I’m always grateful for the opportunity to be a Lab Rat.

Hey there! This is Rachel, Oceano’s founder and vintner. Our 2021 Pinot Noir has great aging potential. Earlier vintages of this wine continue to evolve beautifully, however the 2021 has potential for at least the next 15 -20 years to come. Any questions about the wine, winery, vineyard, please fire them off! Thanks!
@klezman a vintner isn’t necessarily the winemaker but sometimes they are the same person- if the owner is actually making the wines. In my case I created the brand, drive the vision, set the winemaking style and find the right winemaker for the project. We collaborate on sites.’clones, slopes, fermentation and aging protocols.
I wrote a blogpost about it. https://oceanowines.com/ask-rachel-anything-what-is-a-vintner/
Sorry, Rachel, but very few New World Pinot Noirs in this price range are going to last and be good for 15-20 years. Maybe ~10 years with proper cellaring.
This does not mean it is not a very good wine. Just drink it up by 2028-2030 or so.
@chipgreen@HALFEEL@RachelOceano If we want to talk “CA Pinot that ages”, I’ve had 18 year old Rivers Marie, 20 year old Scherrer, 25 year old Calera, and others. So it’s certainly possible. I can’t swear those were all at peak but none of them were anywhere close to dead.
Notice that I wrote: “in this price range”. The 2015 and 2016 Gary Farrell RRV (Toboni and Hallberg Vineyard) Pinot Noirs currently in my cellar are in the $50 price range and according to Cellar-tracker, their optimal drinking windows are 2019-2024 and 2020-2024, respectively.
Ken Wright Willamette Valley and Sonoma County Sun Chase Vineyard Pinots Noirs as examples may hang in there for a few years longer. Cheers!

17.5 points. (scale is to 20) The producer claims this is the closest vineyard to the Ocean in California, a bit more than a mile from Pismo Beach, with soils of marine shale, limestone and sandstone studded with marine fossils. Whole-berry fermentation inoculated in stainless-steel tank. Aged in French oak for eight months. 597 cases made.
Smells of bright raspberry fruit and hints of redcurrant. Beautifully tangy raspberry, redcurrant and sour-cherry flavours have a wonderful crystalline purity and lovely saline kick in the finish. Wispy, barely perceptible tannins. Outstanding. Drink 2023 -2029 Alder Yarrow 6/6/23

93 points. Coming from a mix of clones (828, 667, 777, and Swan), the 2021 Pinot Noir Oceano Spanish Springs Vineyard spent nine months in Burgundy barrels before bottling. Its ruby/purple hue is followed by a perfumed, expressive, medium-bodied Pinot Noir with bright mulberry and raspberry fruit, notes of sappy herbs, flowers, and orange blossom, some exotic marine-like iron nuances, fine tannins, and nicely integrated acidity. It’s a gorgeous, delicate, perfumed beauty that I certainly love. It will keep for 10-12 years, but there’s no need to delay gratification. Maturity 2023 - 2035 Jeb Dunnuck 8/30/23

Oceano Wines is a boutique winery founded in 2016 in San Luis Obispo Coast, the newly designated AVA highlighting this cool climate wine region. This comes off the Spanish Springs Vineyard, the westernmost vineyard in the US, 1.5 miles from the Pacific, on a mix of marine shale, limestone, sandstone. This Pinot Noir is a mix of Swan, 828, 667, and 777, fermented in tank and then moved to 228L French barrels for 8 months’ aging. Fragrant raspberries, wild strawberries, cherry blossoms waft from the glass and continue throughout the silken palate. Acidity feels effortless and easy here, with the marine freshness buoying this, and fine, supple tannins framing. The finish lingers with salinity, easily encouraging another glass. The best pinot I’ve tasted from Oceano, this is singing now. Treve Ring 3/5/24

Yes he is, for every offer. Great to have that dedication around, and good to see a Vintner up early as well. I’ve got a request in now to get you your badge so others can more easily identify you. You the winemaker here?
@RachelOceano And your have been delivered. Welcome, and thanks for the great production notes as well! Might you have TA and pH?
I noticed your mention of aging potential, and that almost sounds like a classic old-world bottling. To what do you attribute such potential and what might you suggest for near-term consumption?
Last night we walked over to a neighbor’s house as they’d just had a baby a few days earlier and their family was staying for a few bottles of wine in the their garden with some cheese and bread. We cracked open the bottle. The group agreed it was quite good and we guestimated a price point around 40 bucks.
This was more or less exactly what I like in a Pinot Noir; medium bodied, not overly fruity or alcoholic but still had some structure and tannin to it; perfect for a warm fall evening with some cheese and bread. It had some bite but not overly acidic, just right for the snacks. The flavors were noticeable berries/fruit but in a restrained sense - I would definitely drink this again.
I regret not taking some pictures . A the price point I see this is listed at, if you like Pinot Noir, I’d buy this; its an excellent value at this price for entertaining or a weekday dinner.
Thanks again to casemates for the opportunity to test drive!
The bottle had been recorked and left on the counter at room temperature with roughly 6 ounces remaining.
It’s been about 24 hours since popping the cork and the wine hasn’t changed much. Perhaps a tad softer/rounder, but that could just be me strenuously trying to find anything different.
I definitely think this wine has the ability to go the distance, and I don’t doubt Rachel’s claim about the aging potential. However, by no means is aging necessary, because the wine is very enjoyable as it stands currently.
I’m no RPM but I’d say this is honestly a great deal on a solid wine.
I’ve been drinking MUCH less wine lately (exercising, losing weight, and all that jazz), but based on the rats and winemaker participation, I don’t think I can pass this up. In for a case.

Good morning!
I got the coveted UPS tracking email and the lab rat email this week and was excited to see what was coming!
When I opened it, I was intrigued; a single vineyard pinot noir from a region I didn’t know much about; I love Russian River Valley pinot noirs (that may be entirely emotional memory). I googled the region and found that it was a new AVA: https://www.tastingtable.com/947801/everything-you-need-to-know-about-slo-coast-wine/
But I didn’t google the wine!
