2022 Overshine Zinfandel, Gold Mine Ranch, Dry Creek Valley
The Vineyard
Gold Mine Ranch’s 3-acre vineyard sits on Dry Creek’s Western hills on a small knoll top inside an east facing canyon. It was planted before the original owner was drafted into the service before World War I. Returning from war, the owner set out to discover precious metals on his property to craft jewelry. He burrowed two holes near the Zinfandel in search of gold, and henceforth the vineyard was known as “Gold Mine Ranch.” Farmed organic for nearly 100 years, Gold Mine Ranch is a very special little slice of the Dry Creek Valley.
The Vintage
The fruit was picked at optimal ripeness, destemmed and fermented at cool temperatures to enhance the fruit profile. Aging in 20% new French Oak gives a robust structure to complement the wine’s density and richness.
Tasting Notes
Dense and dark berry fruits, bramble, black pepper, and dusty earth are completed with a full and long finish.

2022 Overshine Zinfandel, Parmelee-Hill Vineyard, Sonoma Valley
The Vineyard
Parmelee-Hill sits at the southern end of Sonoma Valley and overlaps into Sonoma Carneros. Originally planted to cool climate varietals such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, legendary grower Steve Hill asked if we would like him to plant a one-acre block of Zinfandel on steep terraces of iron rich red loam facing southward to maximize sun exposure. Growing Zinfandel in a cooler zone gives a longer hangtime for extra depth while retaining a red fruit profile and lots of acidity.

The fruit was picked at optimal ripeness, destemmed and fermented at cool temperatures to enhance the fruit profile. Aging in 20% new French Oak gives a robust structure to complement the wine’s density and richness.
Tasting Notes
Dense and rich red fruits like raspberry and cherry but in a nearly candied feel are followed by white pepper and sweet herbs de Provence. The mouthfeel is rich and textured with fresh and long lasting acidity.

Overshine was founded by David Drummond with his friend Sam Bilbro at his side. David’s California roots and love for wine, combined with his brother’s multiple years of playing at the Healdsburg Jazz Fest brought David to Healdsburg. Upon meeting Sam, David tasted wines that inspired his curiosity for what wines could be like here—where the music was turned up, and the feeling was joyous and welcoming. He saw a future for wine that could do and be more. The friendship was instant and together they began to dream up what is now Overshine.

After an 8 day trip with lots of driving on a trip from IL to MD/NJ and back, it was a welcome surprise to see an email from Terry with a wine being delivered the next day. I’m glad we didn’t miss out on a rattage responsibility.
We have not had any Overshine wines, but looked forward to ratting a new Zinfandel. Spoiler alert- this is a very nice wine that Mrs. Rat and I can recommend.
First pour: We chilled the bottle slightly down to about 60, which was the current outdoor temp at the time, very welcome in March. The bottle was opened to breathe for about twenty minutes before serving. The cork had a nice dark crimson color with very little penetration. The wine was a very deep purple going to crimson on the edges. On the nose there was clear spice and berry, Mrs. Rat thought there was a bit of pepper aroma as well. A quick swirl resulted in very quick long legs. ABV is listed at 14.0%.
First taste matched the aromas with lots of fruit/cherry, slightly tart, mild alc heat and nicely lingering on the palate. Mrs. Rat picked up strawberry notes as well. On its own, a very pleasing profile featuring the fruit and spice.
Initial pairings: We put together a mix of foods to try with this Zin: Gouda slices, gluten-free garlic spicy sausage cheese biscuits, special oatmeal chocolate cookies, and apples to clear the tastebuds.
The Gouda was a great match- the wine complemented the creaminess of the cheese flavors. Mrs. Rat said this pairing made her like the wine even better as the flavors transitioned smoothly- “divine” and “it really blossoms with the cheese” came up.
The cayenne, cheddar and garlic in the biscuits was also very good with the Overshine Zin, with the spicy/pepper notes of the biscuit blending with the fruit of the wine.
I also liked the cookie with the Overshine Zin, as it really seemed to work with the flavors of the white and dark melting chocolate drizzle.
At this point, we had our initial notes completed, and I thought it might be fun to get one of our other Zinfandels out that this community might know well. With that in mind, we opened one of our regulars- a 2020 Pedroncelli Mother Clone Zin, also from Sonoma County. They were similar, but clearly different. The Ped was more claret color, a bit less fruit forward, and a bit more tart, but smoother. The ABV is 15.9%, but hides it pretty well. Mrs. Rat favored the bright flavor of the Overshine, I liked the smooth tart fruit on the Ped and the liveliness of the Overshine . Both were very nice, just slightly different profiles to them. We did find that with the additional air time during our tasting of the Overshine, it had softened quite a bit from the initial sips.
After seeing the variety of wines that Overshine produces, I am curious to see if this is a mixed case or all Zinfandel order. We’ve very pleased with this wine and look forward to trying more of their other varietals.
We’ll add a reply for ‘Day 2’ tasting Monday mid-day.
Thank you Casemates and Overshine for the opportunity to rat!
*** seeing the case price and two different Zins, this is an excellent deal!!
Day 2 update at 24 hours. The extra air time changes were all positive, very nicely rounded out and fruit/astringency were right in line with our preferences. Even the extra hour yesterday paid benefits- we did not use our aerator- just pop and pour.
Hello! New Lab Rat here, thank you to Terry and the Casemates team for reaching out about Overshine, a label I’ve been wanting to try in recent years.
I popped both of these wines just before dinner with plans to revisit a few hours later once the kiddos were snoozin for longer pours and deeper thoughts. They went nice enough with cast iron chicken and risotto tonight. Though I imagine they would stand up to heavier sauces or some barbecue swimmingly.
These wines both benefitted in a big way from the 5 or so hours of being open. I will definitely revisit tomorrow, er, later today, and report any new findings.
’22 Parmelee-Hill Zin
Blueberry, garrigue, creosote on the nose. Tart raspberry and decent spice on the palate. Bright acid, lots of pomegranate, savory finish. I want to drink this with some brisket or a reuben with extra dressing.
’22 Gold Mine Zin
More “traditional” zin of the two, whatever that may mean to you. The nose brings blackberry crumble to mind from the ripe fruit and bit of new oak on there…cinnamon and coffee beans fresh out of the roaster. Good structure, shows its heat on the finish. A bit riper palate than I usually go for, though I appreciate how aromatically diverse it is after being open for a bit, especially from quite a hot vintage. If slightly riper and brambly is your jam (intended), you’ll enjoy this. I want to drink this with teriyaki chicken and tonkatsu from the nearby Hawaiian BBQ place.
