2022 Pedroncelli Sonoma Classico Red Blend, Dry Creek Valley
Tasting Notes
Sonoma Classico: The standard by which all others are measured
Definition of a classic: judged over a while to be of the highest quality and an outstanding example.
Sonoma County’s classic roots are in those early blends ranging from “Burgundy”, “Claret”, and “Mountain Red” to today’s high-end “Red Wine Blends”. These wines have been a regular part of Sonoma County’s heritage. Sonoma Classico is the next step in the evolution of these blends. The classic style invites you to gather around the table as it becomes part of the meal, not the centerpiece. It is the sharing of this wine with family and friends that defines it as a standard.
From the fruit-forward aromas to the lingering flavors, Sonoma Classico blends the characteristics of each grape seamlessly: red fruits with a touch of warm cooking spices; plum, spice, and dark berries with smooth tannins and light toast notes. Rich and velvety, this is a medium-bodied blend with a rounded and lingering finish.
The Vineyard & Cellar Notes
The vintage of 2022 was influenced by low amounts of rain due to drought and was followed by a warm summer and warmer harvest, which sped up maturity while concentrating flavors and color. Harvest was early, and the different estate vineyard blocks were picked over the first two weeks of September. A rich wine with intense aromatics, varietal flavors, and mild acidity is the result.
Barrel aging took place over 12 months in new and seasoned American oak barrels with 30% new oak. Working toward an approachable style, the time in oak softens the wine and adds complex layers to the finished product. The oak influence is nuanced and a supporting player because of the judicious use of new oak blended with neutral barrels.

For nearly a century, the Pedroncelli family has been crafting exceptional wines in Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley. It all began in 1927 when John Pedroncelli Sr. purchased a vineyard and a small winery west of Geyserville; two elements have remained unchanged since then - the exceptional place where the Pedroncelli family farms their vineyards and their dedication to creating fine wines.
For nine decades, the Pedroncelli family has been producing wines of the highest quality, tradition, and heritage. Their commitment to excellence and their family-run business make them a trusted source of great wines - enjoy them with confidence.

2022 Pedroncelli Sonoma Classico Red Blend from the Dry Creek Valley
Firstly, I’ll state the obvious, everyone on this thread knows the value of Pedroncelli when it comes to QPR and the overall drinkability of their wine. I’ve been a huge fan most of my life as my parents served this at their wedding over fifty years ago, so it has always held a special place in my heart and on my palate. But, I digress, on to the tasting.
Initial pop and pour: the wine is dark ruby red. The nose is red berries and a touch of candied pecan, perhaps? You can smell a bit of the oak but it is in no way overpowering. The taste, in my humble opinion, is perfect for a complex blend. Definitely get merlot shining through as I would imagine it’s the star of the wine (though the back label says nothing about what is in the bottle).
Man, this is good! The tannins are very mellow but could be a candidate for aging for a few years. The profile is exactly what I would expect from this family-owned winery.
I opened up some mozzarella and house smoked landjager to see if it would hold up, and it does, exceptionally. This wine you could easily pair with food or drink by itself. The longer it opens up, the more a splash of plum is coming through amalgamating with those rich berries and maybe some semi sweet chocolate.
In no way is this a fruit bomb but is elegant and smooth across the palate with a touch of sweetness. The more I sip this, the more I want of it.
I realize we’re all coming down from the adrenaline rush of the mystery case, but boy howdy, I’m stocking up! Moratorium, be damned!
Thanks again, as always, to Alice and WineDavid for the rat program!
Greetings fellow wine lovers. I’m happy to be selected again for another Rat opportunity. I was thrilled when I opened the package and saw a bottle of Pedroncelli Red Blend inside. I have had many of their wines over the years, but I cannot recall crossing paths with the Sonoma Classico Red Blend.
This wine is the 2022 vintage from Dry Creek Valley, ABV is 14.5%. No other information about the wine is provided on the label, although my guess is it’s a Cab-Merlot blend with a few other varietals sprinkled in. But my guesses have been wrong before.
The bottle rested for about 24 hours after the brown truck visit and temperature was >65f.
There is minimal cork staining, the wine poured a beautiful medium ruby color.
I couldn’t detect much on the nose. No noticeable alcohol smell. Herbaceous came to mind maybe. Wife said musty although wine descriptors are not her strong point. I did not detect anything “musty” at all. But definitely no fruits were jumping out of the glass.
Initial sip gave me a burst of vibrant, fresh red fruits with bright acidity, sharp tannins and a long mouth puckering finish. Lots of promise from my initial taste.
After 15-20 minutes the wine balanced out nicely. Much smoother, with well-integrated tannins and red fruits were still the main player. I could detect a little cherry cola on the mid palate that led to a nice soft finish with a touch of vanilla.
Day 2 not much has changed. Maybe a little softer, acidity is dialed back and the nose has opened up. I am leaning towards thinking this is a Merlot heavy blend.
This is a well-balanced, very approachable wine that is easy to drink on its own or would pair nicely with many different foods.
Although to me, the wine comes off as youthful, I wouldn’t see where any further aging would be of benefit, but always fun to see how it may evolve over the next year or two but YMMV.
This is one of those wines that would please most red wine drinkers. A “crowd pleaser” with enough interest for the discerning wine drinker. A quality wine, as I would expect coming from Pedroncelli. A consistent producer of quality wines that many of us have put in the no-brainer, auto buy category. I’ll be in for a case, if price is where I think it will be, $12 is my guess. This wine is punching well above that price point.
