From high school until I retired, you would rarely find me without a .5mm lead mechanical pencil (along with a pen) in my pocket. (No, I never used a pocket protector .) But now it’s only a ballpoint pen, unless I have a standard pencil for marking wood that I’m cutting.

Pencils. And specifically 2B or softer. #2/HB are just way way too hard. Don’t like.
