Lewis Vineyard consistently provides deeply colored, concentrated wines due to the viticultural practice of maximum light exposure to the clusters. A cooler site, the vineyard sits at an elevation of 1200 feet in the Yakima Valley near Prosser, Washington. The first Syrah vines for this vineyard were planted in 1996.
Tasting Notes
The 2021 Syrah is deep purple in color, showing both purity and intensity. The nose opens with alluring aromas of black raspberry, plum, and boysenberry layered with nuances of cocoa nibs, cracked pepper, dried herbs, and a touch of smoked tea.
On the palate, the wine is vibrant yet rich, offering concentrated dark fruit wrapped in savory mineral notes and refined tannins. This wine is expressive and delicious. Enjoy!

Vineyard: Lewis Vineyard
Fermentation: Handpicked and hand sorted fruit was crushed into small open top stainless-steel fermenters. The cap was punched down three times per day by hand. Free run juice was transferred to French oak barrels to complete fermentation.
Aging: 17 months French oak barrels and puncheons. 20% New.

This lab rat report almost didn’t happen, but good luck prevailed. The email from Terry announcing that wine was coming our way arrived just as we headed out for a “Cape-escape” in North Truro, MA. I only had my phone and my attempts to redirect the delivery to a UPS store quickly devolved into dual verification hell and a UPS app lockout. Luckily, our wonderful cat care person Dave was willing to sit and wait for much of the day while UPS missed several notified delivery times. Eventually they arrived and Dave accepted the package.
Upon our return we found the 2021 Saviah Syrah and made a plan for a little LabRat party. We invited a wine loving neighbor with some sophisticated tasting skill and ordered a smattering of take out BBQ items from a favorite smokehouse for the next day.
The bottle is on the heavy side with an attractive label. The first pour revealed dark ruby wine light enough to be translucent and have some sparkle. The aroma was sweet and fruity dark berries. Blackberry, currants, maybe blueberry and a very minor hint of mustardy vinegar. First tastes revealed the dark fruits, but also nicely wrapped with tongue sensing acid and tannins. The overall taste package was complex and refined, but also very fresh and maybe still a little tight.
The nice mouthfeel intensified with the food. The wine really held its own and nicely accompanied spicy white chicken chili, St. Louis ribs, baked beans and some spiced collared greens. All very yummy!
We wondered how this Syrah compared with others, but the only thing somewhat close that we had on hand was a 2021 Saldo Australian Shiraz. We tried that while the Saviah aired and it was very different. Much darker, truly opaque and, frankly, a bit flabby in comparison. The lack of noticeable acids and tannins in the Saldo was apparent when compared to the Saviah. And, as time passed while we finished up dinner, the Saviah taste matured. It lost the freshness and evolved into a really great complete fine wine! The three of us were impressed.
We’ll see what the price turns out to be tomorrow morning. I looked up the winery and their price is $50. I’m sure Casemates will beat that. Today I see the Casemates case price is half the winery price. It is a really good wine!
