2022 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Barbera, Amador County
Tasting Notes
Wine has bright red fruit, ripe cherry, roses, cherry tobacco, spicy with white pepper, sage, and cloves, showing a bright center palate with a balanced, full, and long lingering finish.
Vineyard/Vintage Notes
Grown on steep mountainous terrain in the higher elevations of the Shenandoah Valley of Amador County, California. The growing season started off with a hard spring frost on April 12, killing 80% of the new shoot growth. This produced a small crop. We had a dry summer with a mid-harvest rain. The best wines in Amador are always made after the first fall rain. What was left after the frost ripened nicely to produce excellent extractive fruit.
Winemaker’s Notes
Produced in the Italian old world, food-friendly style.

2022 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Zinfandel, Amador County
Tasting Notes
Dark briary fruit of white pepper, cedar, currents, grilled steak, spicy, raspberry, sage, and plum lead to an extractive, fleshy structure with firm tannin and a balanced, long, lingering finish.
Vineyard/Vintage Notes
Amador County is extremely well-suited to Zinfandel. Zinfandel has been grown in the Amador County Gold Rush area for over 150 years. These old head pruned dryland farmed vineyards produce low yields of extractive, flavorful Zinfandel

After decades of creating and crafting premium wines for wineries like Santino and Folie a Deux – and putting Amador County on the map as a world-class appellation – Scott Harvey launched his own winery in 2004. With decades of winemaking experience on two continents, it’s no wonder his wines have become an immediate sensation. It’s an overnight success 35 years in the making. (Oh, and Scott’s not too shabby with a pen, either.)

@rjquillin I wasn’t that thorough in my analysis, but I could tell at a glance that this offer beats my wine club price, and even beats the occasional special deal Scott offers with $10 shipping. And these are two wonderful wines, vintage after vintage. Almost impossible to resist. And the only reason I’m saying “almost” is that we have such a huge surplus already on hand.
So I received the email from Terry at Wine Country just yesterday. What happened to Alice? Anyways, hello from a long time casemates customer and occasional labrat. I will be honest with you, the last two labrats test bottles I received, I was slow to review because they were not good. I actually surprised I got another shot….
Onto the Scott Harvey 2022 Zinfandel. We like Scott Harvey wines so slightly biased. The wife and I received the wine about 4pm today. Unfortunately had another engagement for the evening and got home at 10pm for a nightcap and popped open the bottle. Not much nose but does smell like a zin. Nice dark ruby red color with some legs. Mostly agree with the notes of dark briary fruit of white pepper, cedar, currents, (not sure about grilled steak), spicy, raspberry, sage, and plum with firm tannin and a balanced, long, lingering finish. Very good drinkable wine and I am in for a case!

Hi Everyone,
Great as always to back on Casemates. Look forward to answering your questions. 2022 had a bad spring frost that was devastating. Some vineyards lost up to 80%. The small amount that ripened in harvest got the full attention of the vine giving the fruit a lot more intensity and extraction. Great wines in 2022. Just not much of them. Cheers, Scott
As the dialogue for this, as well as the recent Pedroncelli offer, both longtime pillars of WW and CM, has been less than ideal, I’m wondering why. Is it, as in my case, a plethora of great offers, here and elsewhere and you’re stuffed? Or is it just you (we) all know the product so well and don’t feel need to opine? I say this as an admitted lurker rather than poster.
@kainc@winedavid59
Likely more than just a shred of truth in that observation. WD has been hitting us pretty hard leading up to the holidays with some pretty decent budget, as well as some great $$$$, offers. Still, it’s a shame some of these offers have little dialog; not particularly helpful for the newer of the 'mates here to choose which offer fits for them.
@kainc I can only speak for myself, but here is what I’ve observed on my own end.
Going back to the WW days, I loved the community banter, the fantastic deals, and the WW cellar exclusive offers. That kept me engaged and eager.
Jump to Covid, and my spending on casemates shot through the roof and I was spending thousands a year on buying wine here, to the point that I haven’t bought wine at a local store now in years.
At the same time though during covid, I saw the engagement from the wineries actually drop (numerous offerings had zero engagement back in 2020-2021). At that point, I began to lose the magic here.
Ped and SH offers began to come to go, and people asked where were they?
My interest began to wane.
Fast forward to 2025, and mix in the better understanding of the negative health impacts of alcohol, and I’m sitting on a bunch of wine that lacks any whacky community impact as I used to recall years ago.
I only jump and buy if I see a really killer deal, or if it’s a community exclusive offer. Neither which I see often anymore.
Just my unbiased two cents.
Late lab rat reporting for duty! Missed the email, and the first delivery. But we have a guest in town so 3 tasters for the Barbera.
Taster1: Initial pop and pour. Nose is peppery, spicy, some fruit (cherry?), a bit of alcohol on the nose which dissipates. Also pepper on the taste, good tannins, dry finish. After some time in glass, nose is more fruity. Overall, delicious!
Taster2: Peppery on the nose and palate. Fruity (blueberry?) taste. I liked it.
Taster3: Autumnal fruit smell, with oaky finish. Please send more.
Thanks as always for the rat opportunity! We all liked it even if we’re not good with tasting notes.

@steverwrx
hopefully more notes to follow
@steverwrx Also looks like the name is raised and embossed on the new label. Fancy!
The Scott Harvey 2021 Barbera and Zin were my introduction to “good” wine and this is what I was saving my $50 coupon for. In for a case.
@user33071884 what did you receive a $50 coupon for?
@jchasma honestly, I don’t remember. I’ve bought multiple cases on here and Meh.com.
The ‘22 Barbera offered here was paired with ‘21 Mountain Selection zin July ‘25… case price was substantially lower, $169.
discussion/rats here
@kaolis looks like 2022 produced much less fruit

@ScottHarveyWine I’ve always wondered – how much does vineyard management change when you’re down so much fruit from the outset?
I’m glad i don’t work in a business that relies on the fortune of Mother Nature.
@radiolysis The vineyard practices stay pretty much the same. The only thing you would not do is crop thinning at veraison. Cheers, Scott
Apologies, all … we missed a delivery for our rattage. I hear it has arrived, and will try to report back later this evening!

@kainc Yes, I miss all the post and question answering. I always look forward to communicating with the woot/casemates community. Cheers, Scott

@sallliu Thanks for the great labrat report.
I would love a lone Scott Harvey Barbara offering. I have too much Scott Harvey zin at this point.
@Gusty Are you sure? I don’t see how it’s possible to have too much Scott Harvey Zin. But even if you do, the Barbera is worth it.
@ddeuddeg Yep. I have at least a case worth of their wonderful zin and only a couple bottles of their Barbara which I enjoy more.
Would love to split a case with anyone in CMH who’s interested (but won’t be online to order)
Anyone in northern MA or Southern NH who might be willing to sell me one or two bottles of each type from a case?
