2019 Scotto Family Cellars Reserve Red Blend, Mohr Fry Ranch, Lodi
Tasting Notes
This heritage release offers alluring spicy clove and red fruit aromatics with cranberry, rhubarb, plum, and red currant on the palate. The initial impression is soft upfront but well supported with good acidity and a polished texture that carries from the mid palate through the finish.
Winemaking
Each lot was picked and fermented individually on its own timetable to ensure ideal ripeness and balance. These separate lots were barreled for 28 months of aging prior to lot selection and blending in March 2022. This release is Certified Green under the Lodi Rules for sustainable wine growing.

100+ Years. 5 Generations.
200,000,000+ glasses poured.
Our familyâs winemaking tradition began in 1883 when our Great Great Grandfather, Salvatore Dominic Scotto, began making wine at home, in the old Italian tradition, on the island of Ischia for family and friends.
Family winemakers have always been the backbone of Americaâs vineyards and wineries, especially in Lodi, the heart of Californiaâs wine country. Fifth-generation vintners Anthony Scotto III, his brothers Paul, Michael, and sister Natalie, carry on the Scotto winemaking tradition as their grandfather and father did before them. Scotto Family Cellars is a collection of signature wines reflecting the finest attributes of their historic Lodi appellation.

Always fun to get picked as the lab rat. The bottle looks sharp and itâs got a nice medium body. Since itâs a red blend with Sangiovese as the main grape, I figured it would be right up my alley. It opened and poured well, and then we got down to tasting.
I had some help this time: my mom (who likes maybe 1 out of every 10 wines she tries) and my dad (who thinks every wine is good) joined in and shared some notes.
My dad, as expected, enjoyed it and immediately asked for a second pour. My mom did her usualâshe was non-committal after the first sip, but then surprised us and said it was actually a very good wine. She liked that it was a bit heavier than what she normally drinks, thought the aftertaste was pleasant, and called it an easy drinker.
For me, I thought it was a solid everyday wine. Iâm a fan of Sangiovese and Zinfandel, so this was right in my flavor wheelhouse. It was smooth and went perfectly with my momâs cooking: meat kebabs, beans and rice, Israeli salad, and purple cabbage slawâall of it worked with this wine.
If you like medium-bodied blends and want something thatâs not overly complex but super easy to drink, Iâd say go for it at this price point.
Lab rat reporting! Sorry for the delay, got my dates mixed up in summer craziness!
PnP of Scotto Family Cellars Reserve Red Blend - I get no nose at all. First swirl, medium legs. First sip, dusty. Hummm. Poured a small glass and tried it with an assortment of cheeses and meats. Salami helped bring out some dark fruit and sour cherry. Cheddar brought out a hint of vanilla. Decided to let it air out on the counter with the cork in for a few hours.
Revisiting after 2 hours:
Still no nose for me. Has gained more depth, dustiness is gone. Dark fruit is more pronounces. I get a hint of leather and cocoa.
2 more hours. Finished the bottle with come grilled sausages, chicken, and pasta salad. Paired well the meats. Now the dark fruit is more pronounced and seems to developed more depth. Has become more interesting and less one note. A neighbor had come over and she said it was âearthy in a good wayâ and had lots of berry.
Overall this definitely needs to breath if drinking now, and begs to be drank with food (for my palate). For the case price you canât go wrong to have some on hand for summer grilling!
Thanks for the opportunity!
