This Zinfandel shows how lively a Zinfandel can be when picked not overly ripe and when aged in a neutral cask. It is an inviting ruby colour. Aromas of “berries and cream” dance with some light spice notes. There is a warm brown sugar note as well. On the palate, soft raspberry, damson plum, and just very subtle oak. I recommend drinking this wine over two days, or one long dinner, to follow its amazing evolution in the glass.
Vintage
2019 was a growing season that began with flooding and ended with fires in Sonoma County. Despite these bookends, we are very pleased with this vintage because the growing season itself was almost ideal, and we were able to bring in all of our fruit, and even have our wines in barrel before the fires became an issue. The summer months saw ideal ripening conditions at Sei Querce: we had long, sunny, but relatively cool days, which allowed our grapes to develop their flavors fully over time, and to be picked when the moment was just right.
Farming Practices: While only some of our blocks are certified organic at present by CCOF, they are all farmed organically, in exactly the same manner. In 2021, we were in the first group of recipients of Climate Adaptation Certification focused on sequestering carbon and minimizing its output in the vineyard. While the certification is new, it only reflects how we have been farming since our inception. We are also certified sustainable, fish-friendly, and bee-friendly.

Among natural oak woodlands that rise from the banks of the Russian River to 1300’ in the Mayacama Mountains overlooking Geyserville, we grow 60 acres of premium Bordeaux variety grapes. Since 2010, we have been selling our fruit exclusively to top Napa and Sonoma wineries. Now we are introducing our own small lot, hand-crafted wines, selected from the very best organic fruit we grow. We call our wine simply “Sei Querce”, Italian for “six oaks,” to remind us of the six venerable oak species that define and dominate the land we call home and the land that grows our wine.
Our fruit speaks for itself: You will find it in bottles from Aperture, Silver Oak, Lambert Bridge, Jordan, Fisher, Coppola, and Duckhorn, often at triple-digit prices. In our Sei Querce wines, we aim to produce beautiful wines that reflect directly back to the vineyard, the soil, the sun, and the growing season. Our winemaker and viticulturists work all season in the vineyards to be able to harvest at the moment they have brought the fruit into a brilliant balance of phenological ripeness, texture, sugar, acid, and flavor.

2019 Zinfandel (Ellis Ranch) by Sei Querce, Alexander Valley, California
Clear, bright ruby red color. Out of the bottle, nose is a bit shy with notes of cranberries, red cherries, damp hay and hints of herbal eucalyptus. I must admit a Zin without raisins up front is always a good sign in my books.
Up front herbal fennel greet the palate. This is quickly followed by a soft, plush, silky mouth feel. A nice melange of red berries, red cherries, raspberries. Perfect balance from front to back. A noticeable oak caramel further ripens the fruit while softening and complementing the body nicely. As it slowly fades, hints of cola and licorice emerge, ending in a slightly waxy, grippy finish.
Zinfandel can be a laborious varietal to work with. I especially like how this winemaker has managed to rein in its oftentimes overbearing characteristics. This is not your typical raisin-y, pepper-y, jamm-y Zinfandel. A lot of care and attention to detail has gone into this wine, resulting in a classy, elevated wine. The very small batch means more focus and and it shows. This is the first time I’m exploring this winemaker (thanks to Casemates) and I’m even more curious to see what they’re doing with other more complex and expressive varietals.
This is a Zin for grown-ups. I recommend a case buy.

2019 Zinfandel
Visually stunning ruby red wine, fast forming legs disappear as quickly as they appeared upon a quick swirl of the glass.
Immediate floral notes followed by light strawberry notes.
Wine is a bit tart up front but very mild near the back. Notes of mild raspberries followed by that floral aroma and taste. Well rounded soft finish followed by a slight bit of dryness upfront.
Wine was paired well with grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and a apple feta salad.
Compared to bottle of 2021 Dragon Ridge old vine zin from Lodi, this Sei Querce was much lighter, softer and elegant.
