This deep, dark reddish-black wine has aromas of sweet cola rolling into cinnamon and boysenberry, preserved plums and raisin cake. The wine is brooding and dark with notes of white pepper, spice and cassis. The rich cassis notes carry through on the palate, lending layers of flavor to this big, rich, classic Oak Knoll Cabernet Sauvignon with firm, chewy tannin. Decant when young or cellar 10-15 years.
Harvest & Winemaking
The 2017 vintage started with ground water coffers very full due to an exceptionally wet winter, giving us some relief to the years of drought. Fortunately, spring weather was mild and fruit set was solid though still lower than previous vintages due to the previous drier years. Summer contained a few heat events, followed by an impactful one over Labor Day weekend. Growers who had done their due diligence with correct row orientation, sufficient canopy shade, and good vine health were rewarded. All said, it is a vintage that highlights the skill of the winemaker and wine grower.
The fruit was hand-picked and the berries were hand-sorted. The juice went through a 2-day cold-soak process to settle the solids before inoculating with an assortment of French yeast strains. Fermentation temperatures were kept cool to maintain fresh fruit flavors and pumpovers were executed two to three times daily to extract the rich color and tannins from the skins. After fermentation, the wine was moved to barrel to initiate malolactic fermentation and was racked twice before bottling and extended aging.
Grapes
The fruit for this wine comes from an area we refer to as the Oak Knoll bench. Lamoreaux Vineyards are tucked into the western hills on one of the first estates in Napa Valley. These beautifully cared for vines grow between ancient oak trees and grazing cattle on alluvial and river rock soils. The clones included are clone 34 and 169.

Sequoia Grove is a family-owned winery founded in 1979 in a 110-year old barn beneath a grove of Sequoia trees in Rutherford, Napa Valley. It is here where we’ve honed our craft of creating world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and other Napa Valley wines that emphasize elegance, finesse, structure and balance. Our consistent philosophy of making wines with varietal character that are reflective of the land helped establish Sequoia Grove as one of the premier Cabernet Sauvignon producers in Napa Valley. Our 24-acre Estate Vineyard and 50-acre Tonella Ranch Vineyard are both located in the heart of Rutherford, where the superb climate and gravelly-loam soils impart distinct flavor in the Bordeaux varieties.

2017 Sequoia Grove Cabernet Sauvignon - $120 = 16.66%
Mid-dinner, completely unprompted, my wife took a sip, paused, and said:
“I’d pay $50 for this. I like it.”
That’s the review.
Deep ruby in the glass. Aromas lean classic Napa, blackberry, black cherry, a little cedar, cocoa, and something that feels like it belongs in a leather chair room. On the palate, it’s balanced and composed. Dark fruit up front, some espresso and oak in the background, tannins present but well behaved. It drinks like it knows what it’s doing.
This is not a showoff Cab. It’s steady, polished, and very easy to keep pouring. Second glass shows up quickly.
Pair it with: steak, burgers, short ribs, or anything you can justify as “close enough.”
Buy, especially at $50. You’ve got a clean household price anchor now, and this one earned it.

94 points. Thick and herbal, this red shows its cool-climate provenance on the western edges of the Mayacamas Mountains, even for a warm year. Structured, malleable tannin and generous oak offer tension and grip, with silky red fruit bright and elegantly presented on the palate. — Virginie Boone 12/31/21
Spectator:
92 points. Juicy and expressive, showing a mix of blackberry, açaí and plum notes, with light anise, bramble and apple wood accents through the finish. Drink now through 2028. 1,590 cases made. James Molesworth 12/31/21
The Man of the Scarf Lots of stewed cherries and berry jam on the nose. Crushed walnuts, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins. Nice finish. Drink now or hold.
Vinous:
93 points. The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Lamoreaux Vineyard is powerful, dense and super-expressive, with bright floral notes that perk up the ripe red cherry, plum and pomegranate fruit. Hints of espresso, new leather, mint and spice infuse the 2017 with layers of nuance that complement its more opulent leanings very nicely. (AG)

A barrel sample of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Lamoreaux Vineyard is deep purple-black colored with preserved plums, crème de cassis, black forest cake and bay leaves scents with notions of tobacco and tree bark. The palate is medium to full-bodied firm, grainy and muscular with earthy sparks, finishing long. Lisa Perrotti-Brown 10/31/19

90 points. Last of the single vineyards, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Lamoreaux Vineyard comes from the Oak Knoll District just north of the town of Napa. It includes 5% Cabernet Franc and gives up a complex bouquet of blackberries, mulberries, baking chocolate, spice box, and hints of espresso. A medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated, balanced Cabernet, it can be drunk today or cellared for 10-15 years. JD 1/31/20
