I opened the box and was surprised to see a bottle of Slingshot. Looking at my order history, I last purchased a case of it in 2018, pre-pandemic. It was a daily drinker back then so I was curious to taste it now.
Popping it open showed a dark red, almost black cherry red on the cork. But, it was the nose that caught my attention. I was hit by all kinds of red berry, red fruit, and blueberry aromas. Maybe a hint of anise and cedar. But a lot of fruit.
The first pour showed a nice color. I always find the color of wine interesting because it gives me an indication of what it’s going to taste like.
In this case, I knew I was in for some fruit. I was afraid it was going to be all fruit.
I was not wrong but I wasn’t right, either. Yes, there is a lot of fruit. But, no, it’s not just fruit. After about 15 minutes of air, some complexity started to reveal itself. The tannins kicked in and provided some interesting mouthfeel, for example. The fruit mellowed out. There were more cedar and anise notes that I quite enjoy in my wine.
Maybe it’s because I live in the southern US but all I could think of was this would taste great paired with ribs, baked beans, and coleslaw (the vinegar kind; not the creamy kind). It would complement the beans and ribs very nicely. The contrast with the vinegar cole slaw would keep things interesting.
Back in 2018, I brought of that vintage to a whole hog cookout so maybe that has something to do with. But, I give it a thumbs up as an easy drinking crowd pleaser. Don’t think about it too much. It’s not that kind of wine.
