A warm 2022 summer brought one of the earliest harvests on record in the Sonoma Coast, with a September heat wave influencing some picking decisions. Cooler pockets of the Sonoma Coast fared well through the heat, and the resulting wines offer depth and finesse. Yields were miniscule, with many vineyards breaking records on the low side for cluster weights. The resulting wines have concentrated flavors with tension and length. All three Reuling Pinot Noir clones were fermented separately before being blended just prior to bottling to showcase the complexity of the vineyard. The Reuling clusters were minuscule in 2022, resulting in more depth and intensity. The resulting wine is layered and expressive, offering a mix of red and dark fruit, floral and savory tones.
This wine offers an intriguing blend of dark red fruits and forest floor with the signature Sangiacomo creamy texture. This vintage offers excellent acidity with silky tannins that are enjoyable now yet will age well in your cellar.
The Vineyard
This vineyard is situated on Roberts Road at the western base of Sonoma Mountain. We source fruit from five distinct blocks. The core clone 115 block was originally planted in 1998 on 101 - 14 rootstock in an old creek bed and forms the base of this wine each vintage. Portions of Swan and Mt. Eden clones are blended in to add complexity and structural nuances. Climate is key to this vineyardās ability to produce noteworthy Pinot Noir. Cool ocean breezes and Petaluma Gap fog keep the heat in check and allow for long hang time while retaining natural acidity.
Fermentation & Bottling
100% destemmed Pinot Noir
Open-top fermentation Native yeast
50% new French oak

Hi All. I received a bottle of 2023 Sojurn CellarsPinot Noir, Sangiacomo Vineyards
Sonoma County Tuesday evening. I opened the bottle to let it breathe for 3 hours because I wanted to get a jump on getting several days of tasting because I was having a busy week and the wine was going to be offered on Friday.
So Late Tuesday I poured a quick sample. I didnāt expect anything amazing because 3 hours earlier it arrived of the UPS truck. Visually, the wine looked like a medium body red wine. I gave it a good swirl in my Casemates wine glass, then checked the aroma. I got some cherry, spice, and alcohol. I swirled it again, this time longer. My palate detected a little cherry with moderate acidity and spice integrated with the alcohol. Once finished, I felt an alcohol burn on the back of my throat. Again, I didnāt expect much that night.
On Wednesday, I sampled the wine at 1:00 pm. So I pulled some paleo beef smokies in from the refrigerator to see how the wine reacted to them. On the nose I got an undertone of light cherry and integrated spice and alcohol. So again, I gave the glass a long swirl. After eating a half of the beef smokie, I tasted the wine and got very similar results the day before, except there was less cherry. I still got the alcohol burn in the back of my throat. I got out my venturi to aerate the wine and poured another sample. The wine was better because the aeration minimize the acid and alcohol. I then capped the bottle and pumped out the air to create a vacuum.
On Thursday morning before I went to my volunteer work in a horsemanship program for special needs children, I took the vacuum top of the bottle. Four hours later I came home and worked in the yard until 7 pm. The wife warmed up a recently purchased Irish sausage hot pocket. I ran the wine through the venturi. This time I got some cherry, a little red raspberry, light spice and alcohol. Again, I got the alcohol burn on the back of my throat, BUT it wasnāt as tense as earlier tastings!
In summary, this is a 2023 vintage and I think the wine needs more time to integrate. I would cellar it for at least 2 to 3 years. The alcohol burn was a negative for me and Iāve been drinking wine since I was stationed in Germany in late 1969.
A Great Big Shout Out and Thank You to Alice and everyone at Casemates!!!
Iād end this with GO BUCKEYES, O-H-, but they already won the NCAA College Championship! I canāt say anything good about the Cleveland Browns, because they suck big time. BUT HOW ABOUT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS!!! What a great year theyāre having!!! Is it their āWINEā & Gold jerseys???
Thatās interesting. According to their website the 2023 Sangiocomo Pinot Noir received 95 points from International wine report as well. I donāt really put much faith in the wine scores so Iām not that surprised, but thatās a pretty hefty price tag.
Well, this labrat was grateful for a midweek surprise. And let me tell you, it was more surprising than the first new episode of Righteous Gemstones.
Normally, we are a PiNOt people. Of the ones weāve tried, some are too sweet, and some were in secondary fermentation. Not pleasant at all. For this bottle,we drank it very two nights. Accompanied by first Will Trent, and then Mark Scout, we taste a delicious blend of blackberry, pepper, earth, and balanced fruits. It lost some bite as it moved from 57 degrees F higher. The second night had a stronger bouquet of smell, and was quite delicious.
Since itās Friday, and a single day offering, to make a long story short (too late!) itās worth at least a two pack for a couch date. Huzzah and good health!

Well not wasting my precious coffee time if we donāt know what vintage is up for grabsā¦I will mention the '22 Sangiacomo maybe being offered here today is over on a flash site that ends in āOā for $35 along with four other '22 bottlings, no Reuling, and a mag of '21 on offer as well.
@kaolis 2022 Reuling, a few notesā¦ Wine Enthusiast says 94 points. Plush and complex, this Pinot gives layers of roasted cherry, zingy raspberry, sage and cola-spice aromas on the nose. The palate is similarly complex, with flavors of deep, concentrated Bing cherry and raspberry alongside Darjeeling tea, lilacs and tangerine peel. ā Tom R. Capo 10/1/24
Kenās Wine Guide:
Very Good+ (93) This light red colored Pinot Noir from Sojourn opens with a fragrant red licorice and pomegranate bouquet with hints of red raspberry, black pepper, and oak. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied with integrated medium acidity. The mouthfeel is nicely balanced, smooth, delicate, and savory. The flavor profile is a very tasty, dried strawberry and red licorice blend with notes of oak and black tea. I also detected hints of orange zest and clove. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and dusty moderate tannins stick around for a little bit. I would pair this Pinot with sous vide lamb chops. Enjoy ā Ken 12/31/24

We have 2 confirmed '23 Sangiacomo bottles (now that PetiteSirah has posted his review), and 1 confirmed '22 Reuling, so itās a pretty safe bet that this is the other '22 Reuling.
As a club member of Sojourn since 2010 I can tell you that they make a consistently good Pinot. The Sangiacomo is generally one of my favorites because it has earthy aromas that, for me, are typical of Carneros Pinot. Reuling is a cooler climate style, was a suit case clone I seem to recall. It can sometimes be a bit lean for me, but in good vintages has ripe cherry and berry and is a lush wine. I go to taste each release and I selected both the Sangiacomo and Reuling from the 2022 vintage ā¦but paid 2X as much . Iām loading up at this price!
[Note this LRR is for 2023 vintage accidentally sent, not the 2022 being offered]
So, for some reason, Even though pinot is not my thing, it keeps coming my way for lab rat bottles. I didnāt love the last one I got, but this one is night and day from that. I received the 2023 Sangiacomo.
To the extent that any of you donāt know, I am generally not a fan of pinot as my tastes tend to run to the kind of big bold red wines ā such as that after which I adapted my moniker ā that are the best pairings for things like ribeye, skirt steak, and hamburgers. I have been known to remark that āI like subtlety in moderation,ā and my usual complaint with pinots is that, especially at the end of a long day, thereās often a lot of effort involved in getting to know them, so to speak. Generally, I prefer it when the wine comes to me.
Due to a very busy day yesterday, I was unable to have this on Wednesday night when it arrived, but in general I think a day of resting after shipping is probably better than popping and pouring it right after it gets off the truck. I had about two and a half glasses and my wife had a few sips of mine so I will add her thoughts as well.
Despite my general lack of enjoyment of most pinots (especially at the typical price points), this wine was quite nice and a very pleasant surprise overall.
Now that I see what the sales price is, I believe it to be outstanding QPR. My wine drinking is down substantially, and I have a mini fridge full of Williams-Selyem, so Iām not looking to buy wine, and especially not Pinot noir, right now. However, if I were, this would shoot right to the top of my list as great example of Sonoma Coast Pinot noir.
Uncharacteristically great legs in the glass (basic Riedel Pinot), which I donāt normally see or expect from pino. Not that I was looking for it, but I noticed it after swirling just because I wasnāt expecting it. Great color, sort of a dark cranberry-ish when backlit.
Nose for days, like Princess Vespa before she went to see Doctor Plotkin but without being off-putting. I want to just keep smelling this forever, there are layers and layers and layers of scents that are really interesting to unpack. Itās quite complex without having to play coquette like many pinots. Light red fruits (slightly underripe strawberry compote), couples with old world notes. Itās earthy underneath that fruit without being the least bit funky. Maybe some blood orange as well? The nose suggests good concentration for a Pinot with enough acid and structure to hold it together.
On the pallet, really nice on the attack. Very fine. Soft grain leather glove type tannins. The fruit is there and again itās quite complex with some sorting out of exactly whatās going on required. More Forest floor and less fruit than on the nose, but not anything funky yet. This is really enjoyable, good acidity, good concentration and viscosity for a Pinot. I really like this. Iām looking forward to the rest of the bottle tonight to see what some more air does.
Long finish for this one. Would benefit from food but it doesnāt need it. Held up to sharp cheddar. Iām an unexpected fan.
Chiming in again on the 2023 Sangiacomo, but if itās not the vintage being offered, these comments might be moot! I had a little wine left in the bottle, about a 3rd of Casemates wine glass. The wine has finally lost itās throat burn during a light lunch of Costco meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Iām tasting the same cherry & red raspberry fruit with a decent integrating finish of acidity & alcohol. No throat burn! If anything on the finish, maybe a little spice too. On another note, I love Pinot Noir from the Sangiacomo Vineyard. Pinot Noir from that site seems to me of being more bold and a higher price point. So I would still cellar the 2023 longer if it shows up on Casemates or somewhere else. Definitely let it breathe for a long time in a decanter, spin & aerate in a venturi, or let it sit in a wine glass for a while. If I had to guess the % alcohol in the 2023, I would think it to be 15.0 to 15.4% Well, time to head back outside. Itās supposed to hit the 70ās today in NEO!

. Iām loading up at this price!
@cyclensip Iāve had several nice wines from Sojourn over the years but need to stay out of this offer because overloaded house full of wine.

So this LRR bottle, too, is not what is being offered today!
Correct?
Whereās the āpalate policeā?! LOL
@ttboy23
Using their palettes to paint portraits of pallets, while practicing pilates?
Looks like itās you! š«µ
@Boatman72 AbV not stated on the bottle?!
@Boatman72 @rjquillin 14.5% per the winery fact sheet for the 2023
