(Leftover) fresh salmon patties, sautéed asparagus and Sancerre. Exceeded all expectations. No pics, gave the second half of the bottle to the neighbors. Crisp and surprisingly aromatic for <50 degrees. Delicious >60 degrees.
A little sale at Urbani, picked up a small piece and also their truffle burgers I’ve been wanting to try. So immediately stored with some eggs for a day (marriage made in heaven, right?) (this probably shoots my allotment of bandwidth for April)
12th hour braised, lamb shoulder, Greek chicken, lemon Greek potatoes, some sides and some green stuff. Blueberry goat cheese, basil, pie for dessert. Ty Caton 22 Petite Sirah, the wine was fantastic.
This 2000 was still good – a little oxidation, but still tasty! Very happy that’s the case, as compared to the 1996 that we opened last year which was dead dead.
@rjquillin at some point we’re just hitting the bad individual bottle age, so i wasn’t upset by any stretch, and if memory serves those were like $12? $10?
@ScottW58 That is a nice diverse lineup, covered the bases. Is that a Fingers Crossed, which? I have a few bottles, never popped. I love ham, and who doesn’t love a honey baked? Unfortunately no ham on my Easter menu…
…no ham because my bride who eats absolutely everything will not eat ham, her mom to blame…so threw some butt in the smoker…long day at the beach, the Smokin-It comes through again
Homemade fresh pasta with a 1 hour bolognese and a light Noceto Sangiovese. Yes, I use too much romano/parmesan. Midwesterners have a cheese drawer in the fridge.
Don’t get into here too often (loss of smell limits). But after a doctor’s visit in Jefferson City today, stopped in at our closest (~60 miles from home) wholesale club (Sam’s) to pick up a few items and saw some great looking Angus strips on “quick sale” for $11.60/lb, so I knew what was for dinner tonight (and a number of other meals).
Pulled out a 2018 Denier-Handal Family Selection (5/18/22 offering here) that seemed attractive.
Made some dough for pizza a couple of days ago so last night did a pesto chicken thing with a boat load of cheese and a ricotta, bacon with blueberry preserves this morning that got away from me a little bit but tasty.
@ScottW58 Well we actually saved a tad for day two…in a good spot, light on its feet in feel but good fruit/red spectrum…day two a little more expressive and a little earthier, in a good way
And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in carrying a bottle of Briceland wine and walking out.
They may think it’s an organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day, I said fifty people a day walking in carrying a bottle of Briceland wine and walking out.
And friends they may thinks it’s a movement.
All this Briceland talk made me take the Wellington Rousanne out of the freezer and pop in a 2020 Briceland Pet Nat. To go with leftover prime rib, of course!
Saw some short ribs at Safeway that had the marbling level of wagyu, so that was dinner! With a 2010 Scherrer Old and Mature Vines Zin. Fantastic. The most Wellington-ish style of the other Zins I’ve had of late.
Finished up the '19 Juslyn…was with another Urbani truffle burger, most likely no repeat on that purchase…and lest anyone think I’ve lost my mind cooking meat, Flannery hanger
With leftover ham and potato soup, thought I would try one of these. For me there is a fine line between tart and sour and this bottle leaped over that line like Tara Davis-Woodhall at the last olympics woof, but I have a palate of a Yak. So popped a bottle with some riper fruit!
@ScottW58 Not a bad swap…agree, think I mentioned the Kivelstadt was a bit of a letdown as well. I bought two 2-packs, have not tried the Carignane yet
@kaolis
Yeah just bought 1 two pack and will try the Carignane later this week. It seemed like a good idea until I read the rat who said this one was really tart (he/she was spot on) Hoping for the best with the next bottle!
@AjRod27 It all looks, well, beyond appetizing. Well done, err, rare done.
Drop around a bit more. Miss hanging out when we were up north for tours and tastings.
@AjRod27@rjquillin Rare? That’s medium well on the @kaolis scale (and probably medium rare on mine.) But everything looks delicious (perfect) IMO. And Happy Anniversary!
@Mark_L It paired perfectly with the finished meal as well! Glad I laid this one down a while, it was a bit unruly at release. @rjquillin Ah, the good ol’ days! I’ll be down in your neck of the woods in July.
Tasted at Occhipinti. Ended up drinking the George Costanza tonight. The Occhipintis were light and aromatic with plenty of acidity…not my thing. I prefer Amarone, Napa Cab, Zinfandel…
@ScottW58 Did go to Donnafugata in Marsala. (Our driver, Alex…who drove us around Linguaglossa and Catania…doesn’t like Donnafugata at all!) I bought a their Right Bank blend at the winery and just had to buy Mille e Una Notte at Duty Free before leaving…sadly, left Sicily yesterday. No problem at Customs with suitcases loaded with Sicilian wine!
@FritzCat
Jealous! Sounds like a great trip! Funny I knew that you liked the bigger wines so I was wondering why you were visiting Occhipinti yup I always bring a wine suitcase to fill up for the trip home!
Sicily it ain’t, but we still enjoyed a pleasant early summer dinner in SoHo, tricolor salad followed by pasta al limone with shrimp and a small pie, accompanied by a Calabrian rose. Sorry I only got a pic of the 'za, and that the label came out so fuzzy. It says Librandi Cirò DOC, among other things.
Lamb shank in some Herbes de Provence, with a not shown NV Williams & Humbert Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Don Guido 20 YO Rare Old Sweet Pedro Ximenez Solera Especial reduction
@ScottW58 just pour me a glass of gravy please…has to be better than that Aussie, ha! After my last two crappy bottles if it ain’t Grange I ain’t drinking it
@kaolis
Yeah yeah all you rich mid westerners drinking up all the Grange while us simple people have to drink there 2nd or 3rd wines btw the gravey was drinkable!
@kaolis@klezman
Looks like I’ll take the hit. Was going to cook these up, but wifey tossed 'em in the freezer cause, you know, they were a day past dated, so we went out. Ended up with a Negra Modelo and Mex instead
@kaolis@rjquillin ours were back ribs not short ribs. But I do have a 5 lb thin cut package alongside two whole slab Wagyu in the freezer that are going to get cooked in the next few months.
A very nice unoaked Chard, part of a sampler I picked up last BD. I’d had rosé from Day wines a few years ago, and I thought the person in the wine store over-hyped it, but this was really quite good. With broccoli rabe and sausage pasta, not pictured here, because I think I’ve posted pictures of it before, and tonight’s was indistinguishable from previous iterations. Plus it’s all gone.
@InFrom
Was that part of her BD17 mixed case, I still need to open to see what was included?
Need to find some more of that olive oil as well, nearly out.
@InFrom Likely so…
Found some info and got what I think I received entered into CT; looks like 5 white, 1 pink, 1 orange and 5 reds.
Made me realize I really need to do come cleanup in deliveries, CT and the well dispersed cellar(s).
Pasta with stir fry veggies and leftover ham for some protein, went so quickly there are no pics.
2017 Bella Grace Vermentino from the '18 tour, that CT incorrectly thought was still at WCC.
@kaolis@kawichris650 Ha!
It’s true that I bought those only a few years ago. And I certainly wasn’t legally able to buy wine when those were on release. The patience is, in part, having far too much wine so that stuff sits around a long time kind of not matter what.
@kaolis They are just sooo ez to grill.
This one, a late selection, suffered a bit in defrost.
That '03 Barlow had an amazing amount of fruit remaining as well; quite tasty.
Yes, we really do have a table with a cloth on it…
Campo Kopa; 27 hours, 62℃ with recycled polenta and fresh green. Another reduction with some Pedro for the pig; really needed that top adornment when the kids were still at home and I wouldn’t have been drinking low proof bottles.
@klezman
I recently had a '16 that I didn’t know I had (it was easier to find than the '09) and wasn’t all that impressed, actually a bit disappointed tbh. Hoping it just needs a bit fewer years than I can give it. Where do you think that '09 is? I’ve got a couple.
Pork chops, rice grits Romesco sauce and the appropriate amount of green stuff! Damn I may never eat another pork chop without the Romesco. And a bottle.
@klezman Vine & Cellar closing sale, $49
Too early for me to tell, needs some additional time with the cork off. Initial impression, a bit new worldish for me, but pretty tasty. Elder daughter liked it quite a bit, so she drank that while I had the Noyes with some pretty heavy sauce without much other flavor over pasta she made last night.
Finished up N.24 and '23 L’Envolée Chenin Blanc…so farm #1 up the road, green and red stuff growing, picked a few heads…next farm up the road I stopped to pick some strawberries, and he had just pulled a few onions…so salad, tart and a chop that needed something but what…damn! romesco would’ve been great I bet, next time ha!
(Leftover) fresh salmon patties, sautéed asparagus and Sancerre. Exceeded all expectations. No pics, gave the second half of the bottle to the neighbors. Crisp and surprisingly aromatic for <50 degrees. Delicious >60 degrees.
@msten but what was it…?
@msten April Fools Lol!
@rjquillin 2023 Roland Tissier et Fils Sancerre
Did some pulled pork tacos again and a pretty delicious Old Goat cab from JB Neufeld.

@ScottW58 looks tasty, and nice tortilla crunch…thinking of putting a chunk of butt in the smoker this weekend
A little sale at Urbani, picked up a small piece and also their truffle burgers I’ve been wanting to try. So immediately stored with some eggs for a day (marriage made in heaven, right?) (this probably shoots my allotment of bandwidth for April)
@kaolis
Not aware of any bandwidth cap on a meal like that one.
@kaolis @rjquillin
No bandwidth cap but he did surpass the Goonie limit, and as such, must perform the Truffle Shuffle.
@chipgreen @rjquillin oh come on, it wasn’t that bad…
@kaolis @rjquillin
I know, I just wanted to say “Truffle Shuffle”.
Duck; bottle was PnP, gonna need some time.

@rjquillin Yumm! Three food favorites.
@jmdavidson1 @rjquillin yum looks nice indeed… doesn’t surprise me on the vino
2021 Iron Horse Vineyards Chardonnay Heart of the Vineyard
Halibut with lemon-dill beurre blanc sauce. Outstanding all around.
@msten
Love me some halibut! And Iron Horse, of course, of course.
@msten nice bird!
12th hour braised, lamb shoulder, Greek chicken, lemon Greek potatoes, some sides and some green stuff. Blueberry goat cheese, basil, pie for dessert. Ty Caton 22 Petite Sirah, the wine was fantastic.
@msten living large…nicely done yum
lamb loin with black truffle grits…
@kaolis outstanding x 2
@kaolis truffle for breakfast lunch and dinner, really living large!
A bit of a mix, sweet carrots and green stuff, potato kugel and ham
2019 Michel-Schlumberger Pinot Noir Le Fou
This 2000 was still good – a little oxidation, but still tasty! Very happy that’s the case, as compared to the 1996 that we opened last year which was dead dead.
@radiolysis ok, gonna find a '96. Last I opened was 12/2025 and fine.
@rjquillin at some point we’re just hitting the bad individual bottle age, so i wasn’t upset by any stretch, and if memory serves those were like $12? $10?
For Easter, honey baked ham, mashed and a bunch of other stuff. And a wild range of wines something for everyone

@kaolis
Nothing better than a butt on the smoker! Yes 21 Fingers crossed syrah.
Tonight leftover ham and mashed with a 04 Elivette, so damn good kinda bummed I only bought 3 of the 375’s

Homemade fresh pasta with a 1 hour bolognese and a light Noceto Sangiovese. Yes, I use too much romano/parmesan. Midwesterners have a cheese drawer in the fridge.
@msten

It’s true.
@chipgreen @msten
but I do have great respect you

Oh please you Midwesterners don’t own all the cheese drawers
@msten there is nowhere near too much cheese on that pasta!

@ScottW58 How’s that vino? I ordered some from tso, but am leaving it in their storage for now.
@jmdavidson1
It’s quite good, my only nit is the finish pretty short on this bottle. I will let my other bottles rest a bit.
Shredded pork in an Ancho orange sauce is well damn good IMHO!

@ScottW58
Looks great! No wine?
@chipgreen

Whoops yes an Aussie.
@chipgreen @ScottW58 looks delish…despite that Aussie ha! and when it comes to green stuff, now you’re talking!
Cheated, picked up some marinated short ribs and tossed 'em on the grill
@kaolis You must be an imposter! That meat looks like it is actually cooked!
@kaolis @Mark_L
And delicious! Cheating can be good
@Mark_L ha!
2012 Briceland Chardonnay w/cheese omelettes and Palmetto Farms grits. This has held up really well and is great with grits!
@chipgreen yum, does sound like a good pairing
We’re on a roll…
@chipgreen 2008?
something different? nope…
@kaolis you make so many stuffed pork loins you must be super fast at it by now!
@kaolis
A work of art cooked to perfection.
@kaolis
Show off
@kaolis
Hey you might not have any Briceland but how was the bottle? Looks drained so it couldn’t be too bad

@msten
Officer Obi
@msten @rjquillin Stockbridge, Massachusetts
If the tide brings Briceland, drink it.
@rjquillin @ScottW58 You went for the crock…
All this Briceland talk made me take the Wellington Rousanne out of the freezer and pop in a 2020 Briceland Pet Nat. To go with leftover prime rib, of course!
@klezman I…I…I feel so lonely…a boat adrift… no anchor…not a single bottle of Briceland…sigh
@kaolis next berserker day is only 8 months away!
@kaolis You’re not alone. We’re in the same boat.
went looking for an Ardente that ended up missing from the case, but this was there
@rjquillin Hardly a terrible second choice!
@klezman @rjquillin yum…looks a proper protein
@klezman Yikes!
Was poking around in wine-searcher and found the winery still has these for sale. $295/750ml
Had the leftover ham and bone so threw it into a pressure cooker to extract the ham goodness and made ham and potato soup. With a great bottle IMHO.

@ScottW58 Yet another tasty-looking meal!
@klezman @ScottW58 damn everyone killing it
Saw some short ribs at Safeway that had the marbling level of wagyu, so that was dinner! With a 2010 Scherrer Old and Mature Vines Zin. Fantastic. The most Wellington-ish style of the other Zins I’ve had of late.
@klezman I have a single bottle of OMV zin in the cellar. I guess there’s no rush on that one!
@hscottk I happened on some good auction prices for some older ones that I’m looking forward to enjoying!
@klezman Will need to keep an eye out. My last bottle is a 2015.
Hit a winery on Mt. Etna yesterday. Toured Taormina today, and taking a break before heading up to Castelmola.
.
Finished up the '19 Juslyn…was with another Urbani truffle burger, most likely no repeat on that purchase…and lest anyone think I’ve lost my mind cooking meat, Flannery hanger
@kaolis
hmmm Juslyn have not had one of those for a minute.
Almost looks like that meat got away from you
With leftover ham and potato soup, thought I would try one of these.

@kaolis
Yeah just bought 1 two pack and will try the Carignane later this week. It seemed like a good idea until I read the rat who said this one was really tart (he/she was spot on) Hoping for the best with the next bottle!
With Buccatini, homemade meat sauce and parmesan/Romano cheese.
@chipgreen He’s OH right? now defunct?
@kaolis
Yes and yes. It was a group of local friends/investors doing custom crush with grapes sourced from Halcon.
Anniversary dinner at home.

@AjRod27 Nice cooking wine!
@AjRod27
Happy anniversary! Looks great.
@AjRod27 It all looks, well, beyond appetizing. Well done, err, rare done.
Drop around a bit more. Miss hanging out when we were up north for tours and tastings.
@AjRod27 @rjquillin Rare? That’s medium well on the @kaolis scale
(and probably medium rare on mine.) But everything looks delicious (perfect) IMO. And Happy Anniversary!
@AjRod27 Happy anniversary! Nice to see you pop in here!
@AjRod27 @klezman @Mark_L Well that’s a great looking spread…and pay no attention to the 'mates behind the curtain!
@Mark_L It paired perfectly with the finished meal as well! Glad I laid this one down a while, it was a bit unruly at release.
@rjquillin Ah, the good ol’ days! I’ll be down in your neck of the woods in July.
Made a ragu and popped a 2016 Briceland Ishi Pishi Ranch Zinfandel, Humboldt County.
Gas Station Amarone; 14.50…Worth every Euro.
@FritzCat I look for the one with the lowest inventory assuming the locals have purchased the others.
@FritzCat
Have you made it to Occhipinti yet? Would love to here.
@ScottW58 Occhipinti is tomorrow. Donnafugata in Marsala is a couple days down the road. On Ortigia right now.
@FritzCat
Tasted at Occhipinti. Ended up drinking the George Costanza tonight. The Occhipintis were light and aromatic with plenty of acidity…not my thing. I prefer Amarone, Napa Cab, Zinfandel…
@ScottW58 The gray mountain on the label is volcanic grit from Mt. Etna. Feels like sandpaper.
@rjquillin It all looks good!
@InFrom W00t! purchase from 3/2012, first of four.
@InFrom @rjquillin Arcadian was on woot?! I don’t remember that. Opportunity missed!
Stir-fry utilizing leftover lobster, paired with leftover wine.
Tonight short ribs and mashed with a really nice Aussie this time.

@ScottW58 just pour me a glass of gravy please…has to be better than that Aussie, ha! After my last two crappy bottles if it ain’t Grange I ain’t drinking it
@kaolis
btw the gravey was drinkable!
Yeah yeah all you rich mid westerners drinking up all the Grange while us simple people have to drink there 2nd or 3rd wines
Beef ribs with 2011 Virage
@klezman First a Briceland run, now a beef rib run?
@kaolis @klezman
Looks like I’ll take the hit. Was going to cook these up, but wifey tossed 'em in the freezer cause, you know, they were a day past dated, so we went out. Ended up with a Negra Modelo and Mex instead
@klezman @rjquillin Sell by date…you still had a couple of weeks of ageing time in the fridge
@kaolis @klezman
I did, she didn’t. qed
@kaolis @rjquillin ours were back ribs not short ribs. But I do have a 5 lb thin cut package alongside two whole slab Wagyu in the freezer that are going to get cooked in the next few months.
@msten nice cork on that 51 year old
@msten
Nice! Is that a Martha vineyard?
@ScottW58 yes
Kids were in town
@msten I was wrapping up college in 75, beer was 99 cents a six.
@msten
You’re a good dad!
@msten @ScottW58 Nice indeed!
@InFrom
Was that part of her BD17 mixed case, I still need to open to see what was included?
Need to find some more of that olive oil as well, nearly out.
@rjquillin It was a BD17 six-pack of mixed whites.
There was also a mixed 6 of reds. Is your case perhaps one of each?
@InFrom Likely so…
Found some info and got what I think I received entered into CT; looks like 5 white, 1 pink, 1 orange and 5 reds.
Made me realize I really need to do come cleanup in deliveries, CT and the well dispersed cellar(s).
It still ain’t Sicily, but it is a Sicilian place in Hell’s Kitchen, with a bunch of cousins and a nice Etna Rosso.
@InFrom
It looks like you were well fed,
but not yet adequately lubricated.
2002 Calera Pinot Noir, Reed Vineyard
Flannery 90-day 107 rib steak from BD last year
A chop, a crab portabella, leftover spuds and token veggies. Yeah, too much heat, too long. First grilled chop in a long time…
@rjquillin looks perfect
2008 Montepulciano that has aged incredibly well. With leftover pizza.
looks like cr*p, but patty of lamb…with goat cheese and onions in rosemary, butter, red wine and demi…
Pasta with stir fry veggies and leftover ham for some protein, went so quickly there are no pics.
2017 Bella Grace Vermentino from the '18 tour, that CT incorrectly thought was still at WCC.
It’s corn season here, so I’ve got some grilling up alongside short ribs and got a Caesar not on the grill. But it’s a no wine night…
With grilled tenderloin and quinoa.
Went to an Epcot themed Far Niente wine dinner the other night.
@chipgreen looks fantastic!
@chipgreen
Great looking dinner and wines, not sure I would pair the cab with a cookie tho, but what do I know?
With Ina’s herbed salmon. A WB dinner party pack of Chardonnay, Pinot and vermouth. Both wines were great, dinner was delicious.
Finishing grilling up some side ribs after smoking them. Opened a 1993 Ravenswood Zin, Los Chamizal Vineyard. Amazing.
@klezman yum…I have no patience in hanging on to stuff but reminds me I do have a smattering of a few '93’s
@kaolis
IIRC, @klezman bought a bunch of Ravenswood after it had already been well aged.
But considering he does his own dry aging of beef, he likely does have more patience than you (well… most of us actually).
@kaolis @kawichris650 Ha!
It’s true that I bought those only a few years ago. And I certainly wasn’t legally able to buy wine when those were on release. The patience is, in part, having far too much wine so that stuff sits around a long time kind of not matter what.
@kawichris650 @klezman I forget you’re a youngster!
@kaolis @kawichris650 Wish I felt like one still
It’s a sushi and sake night tonight!
Asahi Shuzo Dassai 45 Junmai Daiginjo Nigori
Izumi Gold Junmai Ginjo Sake
The latter is from Ontario, with all Ontario-grown rice but the traditional Japanese variety. Great tasting stop if you’re ever in Toronto!
@rjquillin nailing the protein! hanger?
@kaolis They are just sooo ez to grill.
This one, a late selection, suffered a bit in defrost.
That '03 Barlow had an amazing amount of fruit remaining as well; quite tasty.
Cab as cocktail, noceto with spaghetti and meatballs. Both were very good.
Finished up the Rasa…and the Pegau
@kaolis Nice looking lamb chops!
@kaolis nice work! Although an over abundance of green stuff on that plate
how was the Pegau?
@ScottW58 Pegau was delicious. Still no hurry on it but alas, no more
2015 Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs with cheese omelette and grits.
@chipgreen damn that looks good
2016 Franny Beck Johan vineyard with a smoked turkey breast. Have a few Franny’s left as well as some Our wines. Gonna miss those

IH night with a ‘13 classic vintage brut and a ‘17 Pinot. All went well with our sushi.
@rjquillin nice spread
@rjquillin what is this cloth thing? Looks like a nice meal!
Flannery 90-day aged 107 rib
2009 Lillian Ladouys - my first bottle from this producer and it was great
@klezman
I recently had a '16 that I didn’t know I had (it was easier to find than the '09) and wasn’t all that impressed, actually a bit disappointed tbh. Hoping it just needs a bit fewer years than I can give it. Where do you think that '09 is? I’ve got a couple.
@rjquillin The 2009 was great. It wasn’t a special wine, to be sure, but it was a solid and nicely aged proper Bdx.
Clam chowder pizza and Bollinger Special Cuvee.
Pork chops, rice grits Romesco sauce and the appropriate amount of green stuff! Damn I may never eat another pork chop without the Romesco. And a bottle.

@ScottW58 I just had a 2014 of that Rioja. Great juice.
@jmdavidson1 @ScottW58 oh very good sir
@rjquillin
Pretty Little Angel Eis
@rjquillin how’s that Graetz? I thought about getting some when Costco had them.
@klezman Vine & Cellar closing sale, $49
