@klezman A fair part of the phenomenon rests on the aging cycle…if one buys equal amounts of PN and CS/Bordeaux blends, in almost all cases the PN is mature ahead of the CS/B…eventually it should even out and swing the other direction if one’s buying slows down as one gets older…as ours certainly has…
@rpm Our buying has had to slow because we’ve been overdoing it. Well, I’ve been overdoing it. molarchae has sorted out her side of it. Turns out I’ve been buying a lot more Zin of late having gained an appreciation for some of the more restrained and classic style wines coming out of wineries like Once & Future and Bedrock. The Ravenswood library sales in the last few years have been a revelation.
@klezman - at its best, fully-aged Zinfandel can be an astonishingly great wine. One of the half-dozen best bottles of California wine I have had ever was a 1970 Simi Zinfandel drunk in the Fall of 2020. Zelma Long was the winemaker - one of the women pioneers before Cathy - and virtually everything she did was good. Low shoulder fill. Questionable storage. But, oh, what a wine! The aroma filled the room…filled the whole ground floor of the house! Fruit (raspberry) aromas and flavors as if it were just bottled mixed with bouquet and bottle age aromas and fully integrated tannins, perfect balance and the longest finish I can remember on a Zinfandel.
While I do like pinot, I’ve often grumbled to myself that it shows up here a little too frequently. Would like to see more merlot
SWMBO prefers Pinot; rpm prefers Cabernet…
@rpm
As long as the Cabernet is at least 10 years old.
@rpm Same here! We drink a fair bit more Pinot on average than Cab and Bordeaux blends according to CellarTracker.
@kawichris650
you have listened well, grasshopper…

I rarely drink Pinot Noir…I prefer my wine to have some flavor. I don’t do subtle, give me a swift kick in the buds…taste buds that is.
