Our Sangiovese Toscana offers a pure and vibrant taste, bursting with the flavors of summer-ripe raspberries and juicy cherries, followed by a refreshing finish, accompanied by hints of orange zest, cedar, rich balsamic, and a lively touch of mint.
Pairing suggestion: Traditional Pappardelle al Cinghiale topped with freshly grated nutmeg.

Italian wines sourced from the finest vineyard sites of the Napa Valley and beyond.
When our founders first laid eyes on the Luna property in 1995, they instantly recognized the magic and the amazing potential of its estate vineyard, perfectly located along the Silverado Trail. They bought the property and followed their dream, building a winery that paid tribute to the varietals that set Napa Valley apart.

We have lots of wild boar here in California - not sold commercially but I’m told if you can find where they’re being hunted (they’re not native and extremely destructive to agriculture) you can get some of the meat from the hunters. So I may have to buy a case …
We’re excited to have the chance to review this wine — big thanks to Alice for sending it our way! We received the bottle mid-week and ended up sampling it over the course of a couple of days.
Luna Sangiovese 2021 is one of those wines that doesn’t shout for attention but still manages to quietly earn it. If you’re looking for something easy to sip on after a long Tuesday or to pair with a laid-back meal, this wine fits the bill perfectly. It’s a solid choice without being demanding.
The nose doesn’t overwhelm you with bold aromas, which could be seen as a lack of complexity, but maybe it’s just understated. You get subtle hints of ripe fruit with a touch of earthiness — nothing in-your-face. It’s definitely not the kind of wine that’ll have you sniffing for layers of nuance.
On the palate, it’s light, fresh, tart, and easygoing. The red cherries are there, with just a hint of plum, and a little dried herb in the background. It’s dry but the tannins are soft and gentle, with just enough acidity to keep things lively without feeling sharp or aggressive. This is a wine you can take along for a picnic or have open while enjoying a casual dinner with friends. No need for deep thoughts or of aging; it’s just enjoyable in the moment. Seems like it would be perfect with a bolognese, lasagna, or just pizza.
That said, while it’s a solid everyday drinker, it’s probably not the wine that’s going to wow the collectors or impress the most discerning guests. It’s not trying to be a showstopper. I like the simplicity and it’s definitely easy to drink. Sometimes, you want a bottle that doesn’t demand your full attention — something that slips into your evening without making a fuss.
Only concern with buying is delivery timing…Thanks again to Alice and Casemates for the opportunity to try!

Thanks once again to Alice and the people at casemates for the opportunity to do some rattage on this wine. The bottle arrived early in the week so we had plenty of time to let it rest.
Wife and I have had our share of Italian wines over the years but it has been a while since a sangiovese has graced our table. Opened about an hour before dinner to let it have some air and poured a first glass about 15 minutes before dinner. Did not pick up a whole lot on the nose but figured it would open up with time. First impressions were of cranberry with a slightly vegetal edge. Definitely light in body which has me questioning our dinner choice of butter basted rosemary and garlic strip steaks but to late to change course now.
Pairing with the steaks turned out better in my opinion than I would have thought although my wife was pretty underwhelmed. Both of us agreed pretty much with the other rat in concluding this is not a wine which will overly impress but one that is certainly easy to drink. Very mellow accompanying the steaks for sure. Some fruit was present but both of us had a hard time pinpointing what exactly it was. Definitely would pair it with lighter fare in the future.
My biggest issue would be the disparity between the case and 3 bottle price. Getting 3 or even 6 at the $10 price would be an easy buy. Just not sure we need 12 sitting in an already crowded cellar.
@kaolis As much as I love this site and bought more wine here than I would care to admit sometimes the difference in case price from a smaller amount frustrates me greatly. This is certainly one of those instances.
@gtcharlie@kaolis Yes on the “small order penalty %” which has gotten outrageous at times. It often mean “order a case or move on.” I have stacks of cases still from previous years I need to organize. So sometimes the “I would be glad to try a few bottles of this” but look at the punishment factor and decide I should just hit up my existing cases first.
So glad this is available. I loved Luna Vineyards and was so sad when it was sold. The Sangioevese was one of my favorites. The Winemaker, Shawna Miller, left Luna when it was sold in 2021 and moved to her own place called Earthshine wines. I don’t think there’s much left of this so I’m glad that it is available here.

@stolicat You can get ground wild boar at Erewhon in LA because of course you can…lol.
@stolicat Best pork I ever ate was wild boar that had been living in a Paso Robles chardonnay vineyard. Tender and juicy!
@gunny729 @stolicat Nice when the food provides its own wine pairing. Sorry, boar. Tell your friends to not be so tasty.

For a minute, seeing Luna and being pre-coffee, I thought this was Last Bottle, not Casemates.
But wait, Last Bottle did offer this, also $10.

@gtcharlie Yeah, the LB offer was just a few weeks ago, $10, free ship on 6 bottles.
