2022 Sierra del Mar Sauvignon Blanc, Central Coast
Tasting Notes
The color of this crisp Sauvignon Blanc is a pale, flinty, straw color. The aromas are floral (think Jasmine and fragrant rose), clover honey, and lemon zest. On the palate, the wine has a dry entry with lemon curd and key lime citrus, which then folds into guava paste and lychee. The finish displays subtle clove and snappy, juicy citron lemon.
The grapes for this wine come from cool-climate grapes grown throughout Monterey and northern San Luis Obispo County. Mornings are dotted with coastal fog, which balances the days with cold mornings. We pick the grapes when ripe, not overripe. When fully developed, we pick the grapes in the morning when the vineyard is cool and the grapes are cold. This makes it a little challenging to sort them at 7 am on the crush pad, but worth the effort. We go directly to press with the grapes and press right away with minimal skin contact. After all the juice is gently pressed, we cold settle for 48 hours and then rack the juice clean and commence a cold fermentation which will last 21-30 days. The slower ferment allows for pretty floral fermentation to develop, which we capture during the maturation process post-fermentation. The wine does not go through malolactic fermentation, protecting the natural acidity, some of which remains in the form of malic acid.
Food Pairings
This wine is refreshing as an aperitif, but ideal with fresh oysters on the half shell served with a champagne vinaigrette with freshly grated horseradish. Great with seafood such as Maine Day-Boat Scallops seared on the griddle, placed on truffled mashed potatoes with a drizzle of white truffle oil. Try it with a flat crust fungi pizza with wild mushrooms and goat cheese or burrata with freshly cut heirloom tomatoes drizzled with aged balsamic and good olive oil.

Vinum Cellars specializes in world-class wines made not just by hand, but with heart. As steadfast advocates of sustainable practices, we collaborate exclusively with farmers who follow sustainable farming methods, ensuring that the vineyards yield the finest fruit through environmentally conscious techniques.
Vinum Cellars was founded in 1997 by first-generation, California family winemakers Richard Bruno and Chris Condos in the Napa Valley, financing their dream on credit cards. Their focus was then, and remains searching California’s coastal vineyards and special microclimates in search of the best vineyards grown by the state’s best growers. The long-term partners consider their humble roots in the development of products and mandate that each wine offer a considerably high quality-to-price ratio. What this means is each wine is literally hand-crafted from single vineyards and made with a small lot philosophy. From Coastal Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Vinum makes varietal wines from single vineyards and appellations throughout California.
The result is a portfolio of exquisite, eco-friendly wines that not only please the palate but also exemplify our unwavering passion for the art of winemaking and the well-being of our planet.

I have again today the privilege of being a lab rat for you! I was generously sent a bottle of this Sierra del Mar 2022 Central Coast Sauvignon Blanc, so here I am with an admittedly brief review.
This is, to my taste, and my nose, a good Sauvignon Blanc. It’s not complicated, not layered, just, you know, good.
The wine has a bright golden straw color, and a great aroma. I particularly like Sauvignon Blanc which has nice herbaceous or even grassy notes in the aroma, and this delivers. Although, hmm, I guess the winery notes say “floral,” which I suppose I won’t argue with. Heaven knows I don’t perceive most tasting notes the same as the professional tasters.
Taking a sip is refreshing, the acidity is good when this has been chilled, and it brings out a little fruitiness, but not too much. Also based on the taste, I would have guessed this wine spent a little bit of time in barrel. Not a lot, just a little. But apparently I’m wrong there, too! Well, I’ll still enjoy the wine.
One last thing: the specs say 13.1% ABV, but the back label says 12.5%. I think the label’s allowed to be within 1%? The difference is well within that limit, but that might be worth noting for some folks.

What goes with late summer heat and tropical cyclones??? Sauvignon Blanc!!!
I had the great fortune to sample the 2022 Sierra Del Mar Sauvignon Blanc, from the Central Coast. This tasty gem is available at @casemateswine today!
I was tasting with a good friend, who is vacationing with me now.
On the nose, I was finding lemon verbena and grapefruit.
On the palate, there was lots of grapefruit with overtones of starfruit and passionfruit. As the wine warmed from refrigerator temp, I started to pick up green herbs (like parsley?) My friend astutely picked up on a little buttery note – maybe a smidge of malolactic action? She described the mouthfeel as “like cold butter (a little sweet/creamy) with a round mouthfeel”.
This wine was a crisp, refreshing treat to help us celebrate beginning 2 weeks of vacation!
Thanks to the WCC team for the opportunity and for helping us kick things off!
@WkdPanda Probably more herbs than grass. It has been a while since I had a NZ Sauvignon Blanc, and I haven’t had a lot of them. I would say it’s similar to what I remember from those, but maybe with smoother edges than some, if that makes sense.

@cjsiege
Even your vacations are top secret? Haha, have fun! Nice to read you again.
@chipgreen @cjsiege Sounds suspiciously like Bermuda… Enjoy, wherever you are.
@chipgreen @InFrom
Farther south than Bermuda. But Bermuda is also awesome!
VAN MURALS! GROUND SQUIRRELS! SPIT CURLS! AWESOME!
@chipgreen @cjsiege @InFrom I also assumed Bermuda. Maybe it’s Bimini then!
Perfect order code!

So, one review sounds good, the other makes me wonder. Grassy? As in NZ Sauv Blanc?
@WkdPanda Probably more herbs than grass. It has been a while since I had a NZ Sauvignon Blanc, and I haven’t had a lot of them. I would say it’s similar to what I remember from those, but maybe with smoother edges than some, if that makes sense.
@WkdPanda , agree that it’s designed to mimic NZ style. Grapefruit forward, instead of lemon.
I didnt find it super grassy, just a hint on the nose and the finish.
Like a hint of parsley. Not like mowing the lawn.
