@kawichris650 plenty of fruit up front, solid core, good acid/tannins, medium finish. After sitting in the glass for an hour or so, things dimmed down, but likely much of that was due to warming.
Minimal consumption, tasting only for me tonight. I’ve got an airport pickup scheduled for a 23:30 touchdown yet tonight, two hours from now, so likely not back home till well after 01:00 or so…
2012 Harvest Moon Gewurz w/traditional New Years Day meal of roasted boneless pork chops w/ potatoes, carrots and sauerkraut, plus spaetzel, stuffing and some green stuff.
@kawichris650
That looks a lot better than what I cooked up! But I was trying to replicate my late MiL’s New Years meal and it made my LW happy, so there is that.
This has been sitting on the counter since Christmas.
The son-in-law had his “Aha Experience” with this “Port”, so I pull one out on occasions.
Yesterday evening I had a small glass, and it was phenomenal!
Everyone was rockin’ the New Year it looks like…quiet day here, a couple of beers on a sunny but cool beach, couple of beers watching football and a small butt in the crockpot…
Haven’t been to Vegas in 20+ years! Found a new and much better way to get their! Drinking will happen! Although the plane insisted on booze for the short flight
@ScottW58
booze = kerosene JSX
Not inexpensive, but neither are the bottles you consume.
And the private side of BUR is much more friendly than LAX.
At least you’re not going cargo with Ameriflight, but your cellar could.
@klezman@rjquillin
Yes all of this! Show up 30 minutes before flight, grab some coffee get on the plane and go. It was so easy it pissed off Andrea after all the pat downs and cavity searches she’s been through flying since covid a bit more expensive so ymmv. Fun flight crews too like a party plane.
More notes on the current Moran Manor offer thread;
Their 2006 with leftover Beef Wellington and other sides.
The Manor is drinking well and was a fine pairing.
@karenhynes We enjoyed that Cheer with pasta last night, small world.
Tonight we tried a little place with a full bar but no wine list, however they were pleased to let us know that both red and white wines were available. After a bit more questioning, and persisting beyond the many options among mini bottles of Barefoot and Cavit, we ended up with decent glasses of an unoaked Chard from SA, and a SB from NZ. Coulda been worse.
@hscottk@ScottW58@klezman@InFrom
It’s all looking mighty fine. Kind of reminds me of a restaurant where you might go just for the view/ambiance, but here the chow looks good as well.
@hscottk@InFrom@klezman@rjquillin@ScottW58 On the cruise we took recently, Nobu was one of the specialty restaurants on board. One seating was included in the fare and we had the omakase and an order of the miso black cod. We were impressed enough to go back a second time even though we were charged $50 per person. After looking at the menu, it was a helluva deal!
@davirom@hscottk@InFrom@klezman@rjquillin
Yeah that black cod is special I guess they marinate it for 2 or 3 days. I asked the server if they had a list of what they were serving, he said no they didn’t but he would write it down for me. No worries be drank well with us and I tipped the crap out of him
@davirom@hscottk@InFrom@klezman@rjquillin
Yeah I bought some of the same from Alaska gold after a friend and his wife made the dish, I only marinated for a day and it was good but not as good as our friends. It probably would have been better if I waited 3 days but patience is not one of my qualities Nobu’s was light years ahead of mine.
@kaolis and @infrom enabled me again so made a pan pizza with roasted chicken and and a mild white sauce spiked with mustard and horseradish and chopped red onion. Oh man if you have not tried it shut the hell up and get on it learned from my friend in Iowa. And drinking this while listening to the 70 mph winds tonight
Unfortunately, not so good. Must have had some seepage. The wine was very acetic. Not quite vinegar but well on its way. Most of it went down the drain.
@chipgreen@kawichris650 That was the screwcap on the Duchess?? Oh no!
They don’t fail often but when they do the consequences are usually worse than for cork in my experience.
@ScottW58 I can’t think of anybody else who would open Cristal with hot dogs. Love it!
If you guys need or want to get out, we are happy to have you over.
@ScottW58
Almost a perfect horizontal line of fill levels!
What kind of hot dogs? I usually get Nathan’s but recently had some all beef Hebrew National dogs (huge markdown at Costco) that were just as good.
@chipgreen@ScottW58 Hebrew National salami is great if you score it to create some texture and then grill it with honey mustard until it’s caramelized on the outside.
@chipgreen some old costco dogs, still good as I’m still alive looked a little dicey last night with flames from fire so did some packing and found a lot of bottles I forgot about. Looking better this morning tons of aircraft pounding it!
@ScottW58
Scary shit. So devastating. Here’s hoping that’s as close as it gets to you and that they are able to contain it soon. Are the winds dying down at all?
@rjquillin In the cellar, I stored it on its side in the fancy box with its several friends. After opening, I left it on the counter, corked. My impression was that it was best after 24 hours, and might have started declining after 10 days or so.

@rjquillin We both really liked it. Mostly old school feel to it, showing some maturity already in a good way. Bought a few, WTSO $37. Thought it might be interesting with the large dose of Colorino, it is Sangiovese 50%, Colorino 45%, Chianti Malvasia Bianca and Trebbiano 5%
@pjmartin@rjquillin
I was able to force down the drink but yakked up the horse pills. Besides, the drink is free. It was $40 for the pills. I wonder if you went to the same guy as me if you got the pills. @rjquillin My wife goes in (or, actually the Dr. does) on Monday. She’s on the 10 year plan, mine is 3 years and is coming up soon. I have no problems with the liquid…she’s kinda freaked out about the hole thing.
Practice is off Mull Ave. I am on the 10 year cycle, wife is on the 5 (her family has history.) Different Drs in the practice, my Dr moved to pills first. It may have cost me $40 but it’s well worth it to me, faster, less trouble. Wife was not happy she didn’t get offered the pills. In her recovery, she told the Dr she was mad that I got the pills and she didn’t. He said he had not yet moved but was going to. In fact, he was scheduled for HIS first procedure and was given the pills. He was asking ME what my experience was like. I told him, much preferred. He told Sue she would get the pills next time.
My LW is off to DC with her friends this weekend to attend the Inauguration and related events, so I set her up with a 6-pack of wine to help them enjoy the festivities.

@rjquillin @ScottW58 $400+ to Vegas from LAX isn’t that bad given the included amenities.

Listan Negro, a new varietal for me.
No food picks tonight, how much Vegas decadence can people handle just a glass of Heidsieck brut from the list and this beauty.
@ScottW58 I remember when good Vegas food was the awful free breakfast buffet…ha!
@karenhynes We enjoyed that Cheer with pasta last night, small world.

One last gorge at Nobu
@ScottW58 Everything looks gorgeous.
@ScottW58 Commence drooling
@ScottW58 I’m not worthy.
@hscottk I did want to order a torch for some of that fish but didn’t want to get kicked out of the restaurant
@hscottk @ScottW58 @klezman @InFrom

Nobu menu
You do the Omakase?
@ScottW58 Thanks for sharing pictures. I hope it was a memorable evening.
@hscottk @InFrom @klezman @rjquillin

@davirom @hscottk @InFrom @klezman @ScottW58
No guarantees this is the same, but I purchase Sablefish from Alaska Gold and they have a miso black cod recipe we’ve made and quite enjoyed.
[edit]
Reading the recipe yet again, as a footnote I see.
This is a variation on a classic recipe made famous by Nobu’s Kitchen and many know it as Nobu’s black cod.
@rjquillin @ScottW58
I was also curious and did some searching. This copycat recipe seems to be highly rated.
https://coupleinthekitchen.com/nobu-black-cod-recipe/
Now I’ve gone down the rabbit hole of miso pastes in order to decide which white miso to get haha.
@davirom @hscottk @InFrom @klezman @rjquillin

2014 Qupe Syrah, Sonnie’s. No VA issues here. A very nice, aged Syrah. Good work WD and Andrew!
@CorTot I almost opened one of those last night. How’s it doing?
@klezman justly lovely.
Got the other 1/2 waiting for me tomorrow.
I would say no reason to hold at this point, drink up.
@CorTot @klezman
Hoping this doesn’t then suggest I need to drink-up on my older Victorys as well?
Hope not
j/k
@CorTot @klezman @rjquillin I had a 2008 a couple weeks ago, it was outstanding.

w/Chinese takeout
@chipgreen
How’s she holding up?
@chipgreen
That’s certainly a blast from the past. One of the early autobuys, the Duke and the Duchess. A great club perk.
@chipgreen @msten I’ve got 1x of the 2013 left from our wedding…probably will open it for our 10th anniversary.
@klezman My last Wellington white is a 2013 Chard. I’ve drank all the rest of our whites.
@HitAnyKey42 I’ve still got some Chard, Marsanne, Roussanne in the white department.
@kawichris650
Unfortunately, not so good. Must have had some seepage. The wine was very acetic. Not quite vinegar but well on its way. Most of it went down the drain.
@chipgreen @kawichris650 That was the screwcap on the Duchess?? Oh no!

Well fires on 3 sides but still fairly far away but can’t get food delivery so hot dogs and a great bottle, I’m a simple man!
@ScottW58
Tube steaks and Cristal… what a pairing!
Seriously though, the fires over there are truly horrific. I hope you, your loved ones, and everyone in the area stays safe.
@kawichris650 so far so good and thanks
@ScottW58 I can’t think of anybody else who would open Cristal with hot dogs. Love it!

Happy to hear you’re safe from the fire, and from the old dogs.

Tonight (and tomorrow) it’s an experiment in infanticide: 2022 Bedrock Wine Co. Heritage Teldeschi Ranch
This:
Day 2, Delicious.
Not celebrating, but pulling 'em off the top shelf…'cause…
Also this:
Finished last night, opened about 10 days ago. Very very good.
@FritzCat how did you store it?
@FritzCat @rjquillin It’s Tawny Port…it doesn’t really matter, does it?
@FritzCat @klezman
I need glasses to read script…
@klezman @rjquillin Rare Tawny
@rjquillin In the cellar, I stored it on its side in the fancy box with its several friends. After opening, I left it on the counter, corked. My impression was that it was best after 24 hours, and might have started declining after 10 days or so.
@FritzCat
Congrats, Grandpa? Even though you said not celebrating, it seemed like an obvious hint, lol.
@chipgreen Ha, am, and will be again soon…but that wasn’t what I was getting at.
@FritzCat
Well, we don’t like to talk about that other thing.
Fantastic. Will only get better.
Drinking up prior BD purchases to make room for future ones. With sous vide/seared salmon and white green stuff.
Drank these at a friend’s house last night while watching the Buckeyes turn the Longhorns into ground beef.
@chipgreen One of the dads at our school is from there and must have had a tense little while until that fumble-TD.
@klezman
Being 99% scar tissue from having lived my entire life as a Cleveland sports fan, I expected OSU to find a way to lose. Sometimes I have to remind myself that they are from Columbus, not Cleveland.
@chipgreen @klezman
I am very happy for you and well me, took them and the under when we were in Vegas
Well since I pulled all this crap out to make an escape might as well drink some
@ScottW58 Who could have possibly predicted that??
@klezman @ScottW58
pretty sure Kyle would approve as well
@ScottW58 That’s a helluva Go bag!
Hope no escape is needed.
@InFrom @ScottW58 smoke ‘em if you got ‘em…no pun intended
Surprisingly fresh tasting for a 17 year old white Burg.
2019…Flannery chuck
@kaolis
Lovely. What year was the Vare? Had a ‘17 a few months back that was singing.
@kaolis Wow! A Napa cab sauv at 12.2% abv!
@davirom @chefjess @kaolis
2019?
That is one interesting label, can I assume the juice was equally good?
@kaolis @rjquillin
Oops, disregard. The pics were too much eye candy to pay attention to the date in the comments
@chefjess @kaolis
I certainly hope it was the wine that was from 2019, rather than the Flannery.
@chefjess @kawichris650 well Flannery does like to put a little age on them… 5 years is a how many days aged steak?
@chefjess @davirom @rjquillin Tasty juice…not your typical Napa cab by any stretch…acid and bright fruit, my first go at Beta
2017 KVR day 2.
Wow!
Go Bills!
2015 Rubissow Syrah, Mount Veeder.
I picked this up probably 6 years ago at Grocery Outlet along with some vintages of the “Les Trompettes” bottlings. I feel like i paid $20 for this and it was a stunner.
Similar purchases, i was buying the GO out of the mid-90s Rubissow-Sargent “Red Table Wine” that was $10. By far the best value i’ve ever had at GO. Those were the days…
@radiolysis I missed out on all of those because GO isn’t anywhere within a 45 minute drive for me. Not that I’m hurting for wine inventory.
@klezman i’m really trying my hardest to consume bottles irrespective of history or hoarding. Tonight is my anniversary, so we’ll get takeaway Mexican and go with a vintage Champagne. Just cuz. If Scott can do hotdogs and bubbles, i’ll do burrito and bubbles.
@radiolysis as you should!
We did champagne with garlic sauce pork yesterday.
@radiolysis Happy Anniversary!
@klezman @radiolysis
Atta boy your life will be better for it and Happy Anniversary!
@radiolysis
Happy Anniversary as well;
and don’t forget all of the York Creek they blew out!
@radiolysis @rjquillin
Saw an ad for Grocery Outlet on local cable last night, what? Looked it up, there is one about an hour from me near Youngstown.
Might have to make the trek one day just to see what they’ve got going on, but I seriously doubt we have the kind of wines/wine deals you have in the CA GOs.
@chipgreen @radiolysis @rjquillin And yet I just saw a local televised commercial for GO. Their online store locater shows 2 in Brooklyn and Parma
@pjmartin @radiolysis @rjquillin
The Parma and Brooklyn locations showed up on my phone today instead of Boardman. I looked at their weekly ad and didn’t see any beer or wine. Looked at a random CA location ad and they had wine on sale. Called the Parma location and talked to the owner.

Why not some tail on a Monday?
@rjquillin I can’t think of any reason but what’s really on my mind after that statement is offensive and repugnant to normal people so I will shut up now!
Honeysuckle with limited mousse. We went to Veuve Clicquot on our honeymoon so it was appropriate.
Probably explains the lack of bubbles – the cork didn’t expand at all overnight.
@radiolysis bravo
2013 Woot Cellars Revelry - still drinking very good and I have around a case remaining.
Well a few nights ago after the boss and my dog left me for dead during the height of the fires… Well I sent them to our daughters Paprika chicken and potatoes and a cab I love!
@ScottW58 Glad y’all are feeling good to be back at home.
@ScottW58 How close did all that end up approaching to you?
@rjquillin @ScottW58 FWIW my read of the map is ~2.5 miles as the crow flies. I’m also watching a friend’s parents’ house that is awfully close to the perimeter but still shows as outside it.
https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2025/1/7/palisades-fire
@klezman @ScottW58
Thanks. I’ve seen the map, the issue is placing the location within the map.
@klezman thanks
@klezman @rjquillin that is correct 2.5 of 3 miles.
@klezman @rjquillin @ScottW58 Scary stuff. Spottswoode one of my early loves, had quite the vertical going for awhile…all consumed
@kaolis @klezman @rjquillin
Yeah still one of my favorites just occasionally can find a bottle or two for reasonable prices now a days.
Speaking of reasonably priced wines… with a reasonably priced dessert.
@chipgreen Quite the pairing! I’d think the cake’s sweetness would make the wine seem bitter and/or sour!
@klezman
The wine was great with the chocolate flavor of the pie!
@chipgreen
Got some good news yesterday so we decided it’s time to finally pop a UTW:
2017 Under The Wire Sparkling Chardonnay Chuy
Going to have it with pork chops.
@klezman Congrats, whatever the news!
@davirom @klezman
Yes, any good?
@davirom @ScottW58 yeah, it’s excellent.
Details forthcoming, or just see us in person!
The boss is working late so I thought I would try out a new purchase to make sure it is worthy of her tender palate and for science of course. And a newly arrived bottle. Wow just wow!
@ScottW58 yummmmmmmmmmmmm
@kaolis @ScottW58 looks seriously delicious. Now I need to look those guys up since they’re semi local.
@ScottW58
@kaolis meat, with @karenhynes wine!
Finished up the the Italian from last night with a parbaked delivery 'za, we are pretty much in a pizza desert here but whatever… the burg tonight, veal, Rollen’s grits, dialed back the green stuff so not to get kicked out of the club
@kaolis lol well to be honest I had a bowl of green stuff too really like the Lumpp and have a couple 19’s although kinda pricey now too
@kaolis how was that 16 Italian?
@rjquillin We both really liked it. Mostly old school feel to it, showing some maturity already in a good way. Bought a few, WTSO $37. Thought it might be interesting with the large dose of Colorino, it is Sangiovese 50%, Colorino 45%, Chianti Malvasia Bianca and Trebbiano 5%

@rjquillin What a fine pairing!
The newer pill form ‘stimulant’ is much preferred!
@pjmartin @rjquillin

Ugh, suddenly my phone isn’t letting me upload.
Actually, I think it’s the site, not working on my laptop either.
@InFrom I think you’re right.
Lemme see if anyone is awake that may be able to twist the nut…
